We are looking for an Operations Optimization Specialist II to join our team in Houston Texas, Calgary, Alberta or Edmonton Alberta.

Role is responsible for tracking and optimizing UST’s electric power costs and electric contracts of approximately $125MM - $150MM / year, projecting future costs, managing new contracts and project team integration.

Working in a fast-paced environment in the Commercial Operations department, the Operations Optimization Specialist II will work independently, prioritize and deliver against deadlines, across multiple workstreams.

What You Will Do:

  • Manages and accountable for optimization of UST’s electric power costs and contracts of approximately $125MM - $150MM / year. Leads effort and work with Outage & Commercial Coordination organization to develop and maintain the end-to-end power cost management strategies and direction for UST.

  • Develops and maintains items related to, but not limited to, (i) budget / forecast of electricity costs, (ii) projection of electricity usage at compressor stations, (iii) projection of system and incremental rate schedule usage, and (iv) optimization of power costs while maintaining reliable firm service.

  • Develops and maintains gas purchase strategies including how power contracts should be structured (hedged, locked-in, through marketers or local distribution company).

  • Key contributor/consultant to field projects associated with changes at compressor stations that impacts electric usage at the station or compressor. This includes discussions with electric providers/project leaders on utilization, needs, contractual language, tariff interpretations, costs and potential outages.

  • Coordinates with Regulatory to support FERC filings associated with EPC, deferrals, electric usage and projections.

  • Supports the renewables group to determine the impact of solar installations to electric usage and invoicing impacts.

  • Takes a lead role with to automate tasks related to power optimization and develop new applications for managing automatization and creating predictive models.

  • Takes a lead role working with with Contract Administration, Asset Planning, Regulatory and FP&A to develop budget forecasts and variances explanations. Team will work with Gas Control, Capacity Planning and Outage & Commercial Coordination to optimize throughput, GHG emissions and costs.

  • Takes a lead role working with 3rd party power providers and consultants to determine long-range power cost forecasts and apply to budgeting and variance explanation process.

  • Takes a lead role in consulting with business development groups to optimize EPC and power in the economics of their proposed project. This includes long range planning for EPC costs and post implementation analysis of EPC related to incremental projects and negotiated rates.

  • Works in collaboration with the Market Innovation team to perform analysis in order to determine how market factors around natural gas pricing, gas throughput and power prices, affect our overall power costs.

  • Develops training for internals to facilitate understanding and application of power costs optimization for GTM. Train employees to act as backups to the process.

  • Supports internal coordination strategies from Commercial Coordination & Analytics, Regulatory and FP&A teams to align internal departments messaging, and communication related to power optimization

Who You Are:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Engineering, Finance, or additional equivalent experience.

  • 10-12 years of experience in any of the following areas: Commercial Operations, Capacity Planning, Marketing, Regulatory, Projects, Gas Control, Engineering, Operations, TIS or related area

  • Strong written and verbal communication, problem solving, analysis, math, interpersonal skills, self-direction, and ability to prioritize effectively.

  • Sense of urgency, with well-developed prioritization, time management and multi-tasking skills

  • Experience in influencing internal stakeholders on companies and/or customer needs to find win-win scenarios

  • Strong focus with the ability to listen, identify key issues, advise, and maintain confidentiality.

  • Efficient in the use of tools such as Microsoft Excel

Working Conditions

  • Located in Houston, in an office building.

  • Stress levels can be above normal as the work is highly visible and decisions affect all integrated processes associated with new or changed business or operations.

  • Travel is possible.

  • Numerous, often competing interests must be managed concurrently.

Physical Requirements include but are not limited to:

Grasping, kneeling, light – moderate lifting (objects up to 20 pounds), reaching above shoulder, repetitive motion, typing, sitting, standing, visual requirement (able to see screens, detect color coding, reads fine print), hearing requirement and the ability to sit at a computer for long periods of time.
