What You’ll Be Doing

As an Associate Portfolio Manager (APM), Fixed Income, you play a pivotal role within the Fixed Income Team, contributing meaningfully to the management of our Private Debt portfolio, with a primary focus on global infrastructure and power sectors. You will collaborate closely with senior portfolio managers, fellow associate portfolio managers, and analysts, leveraging collective expertise to drive success. In this position, you are responsible for actively managing the Private Debt portfolio by shaping investment strategies and overseeing trading implementation. Your strategic approach will encompass sub-sector positioning, security valuation, and selection—across both bank loans and bonds. You are also expected to develop informed perspectives on companies and projects (investment grade), as well as diverse infrastructure sectors, working in partnership with our credit research professionals and the broader fixed income team. Additionally, you will contribute to marketing and client service initiatives, supporting both institutional and retail clients and fostering strong relationships across our client base.

At CIBC we enable the work environment most optimal for you to thrive in your role. To successfully perform the work, you’ll be on-site full-time.

How You’ll Succeed

  • Portfolio Management and Collaborative Engagement - You are responsible for actively managing the existing portfolio by staying informed on current positions, updating credit memos, and seeking approvals for new investments. In this role, you collaborate closely with sales, product, compliance, and client servicing teams at Global Asset Management (GAM), while also building and maintaining strong relationships with the investment dealer community and Corporate Banking teams. You work collaboratively with other asset teams, present and communicate effectively both internally and externally, and contribute to marketing and servicing efforts for both institutional and retail clients. Additionally, you differentiate and monitor key drivers for outperformance within the infrastructure and power sector, supporting buy and sell decisions presented to the Credit Committee through rigorous credit analysis.

  • Cross Functional Collaboration and Relationship Building - You foster strong, collaborative relationships by working closely with CIBC World Markets Corporate Banking teams across Canada, Europe, and the US, as well as engaging with the GAM Private Credit (non-investment grade loans) team and the GAM Global Fixed Income Credit Research team. Additionally, you interact and partner with CAM operations, product, and compliance teams to ensure seamless communication and alignment across all areas of the business.

  • Process Improvement and Operational Excellence - As a valued member of the business unit, you have the authority to recommend changes to business processes, empowering you to drive enhancements in operational efficiency and effectiveness.

Who You Are

  • You bring over five years of experience in research and financial analysis within the Canadian Corporate Banking or Fixed Income field, and have demonstrated expertise working with derivatives, including duration and currency hedging.

  • You have a degree in Engineering, Math, Finance, Accounting, or similar field.

  • You are a certified professional, holding or working towards a CFA designation or an equivalent credential like CIM/PDO or any OSC courses to be registered.

  • You demonstrate sound judgement in risk assessment. You apply a valuation-driven approach to risk assessment, recognizing that investment decisions depend on both the quality of the bond and its price. You evaluate opportunities by carefully balancing risk and valuation, ensuring you only pursue investments when the price appropriately reflects the underlying risk.

  • You are digitally savvy. You demonstrate advanced proficiency in computer modeling and spreadsheet analysis to support informed decision-making. Experience with Bloomberg is considered a valuable asset.

  • You are a thoughtful and articulate communicator. You are able to convey complex information with clarity and confidence. You excel at delivering presentations to both internal and external stakeholders, fostering strong engagement and understanding.

  • You are an effective problem solver. You leverage your strong analytical reasoning and mathematical skills to address complex issues and make informed decisions. Your structured approach enables you to navigate challenges with confidence and deliver thoughtful solutions.

  • Values matter to you. You bring your real self to work and you live our values - trust, teamwork, and accountability.
