A healthier future. It’s what drives us to innovate. To continuously advance science and ensure everyone has access to the healthcare they need today and for generations to come. Creating a world where we all have more time with the people we love. That’s what makes us Roche.
Advances in AI, data and computational sciences are transforming drug discovery and development. Roche’s Research and Early Development organizations at Genentech (gRED) and Pharma (pRED) have demonstrated how these technologies accelerate R&D, leveraging data and novel computational models to drive impact. Seamless data sharing and access to models across gRED and pRED are essential to maximising these opportunities. The Computational Sciences Center of Excellence (CS CoE) is a strategic, unified group whose goal is to harness the transformative power of data and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to assist our scientists in both pRED and gRED to deliver more innovative and life-changing medicines for patients worldwide.
The Opportunity
Within the CS CoE organisation, the Data and Digital Catalyst (DDC) organization leads the modernization of our computational and data ecosystems by integrating digital technologies across Research and Early Development to empower stakeholders, advance data-driven science and accelerate decision-making. We are seeking a Software Engineer (SE5/SE6) to join our growing engineering team building the digital and automation infrastructure that underpins this vision. You’ll help design and deliver the software that connects scientists, data, and instruments across disciplines — from modern web applications to lab automation integrations. You might focus on full-stack web applications, developing elegant and performant workflows for experimental design and data visualization. Or, you might focus on automation and data integration, building robust services that connect workcells, instruments, and experimental data systems. Either way, you’ll contribute to the platforms that make our science faster, smarter, and more reproducible.
In this role, you will:
Design, build, and maintain full-stack or automation-facing software systems that power R&D workflows.
Collaborate closely with scientists, automation engineers, and computational teams to translate experimental and data needs into reliable, production-ready software.
Develop high-quality, testable code in TypeScript and Python, building APIs, services, and interfaces that integrate data and instrumentation.
Design and implement GraphQL and REST APIs, middleware, and service layers following modern patterns.
Participate in system design and architecture discussions to evolve our platform’s scalability and reliability.
Contribute to onboarding new lab automation workflows and improve automation reliability and observability.
Define standards for data exchange, workflow orchestration, and platform interoperability.
Mentor peers and share best practices in software design, testing, and maintainability.
Implement and maintain complex client-side state management patterns using Redux and React Context, ensuring predictable, maintainable application behavior across large codebases.
Who you are
Software Engineer
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or similar technical field with at least 2-4+ years of software engineering experience or 4-7 years (SE6) of professional software engineering experience
Expert in Node-based development and TypeScript (both front-end and back-end), with deep understanding of modern JavaScript frameworks and build tooling
Strong proficiency in Python
Deep understanding of modern JavaScript frameworks (React, Node.js/Express, Apollo)
Experience with ORMs such as Drizzle or Prisma, and familiarity with SQL databases
Deep understanding of state management frameworks (Redux, React Context), with the ability to evaluate trade-offs between global and local state for scalable UI architecture.
Solid understanding of testing practices, CI/CD pipelines, and agile development workflows
Strong testing discipline with experience using Playwright for end-to-end testing, Vitest (and React Testing Library) for unit and integration testing, and Storybook for component development and visual regression; able to make thoughtful trade-offs between test coverage, speed, and maintainability
Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work across scientific and technical domain
The expected salary range for this position based on the location of California is $98,400 182,700. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
