About the Team

The Autonomy Operations organization is responsible for bringing Nuro’s technology safely from lab to road. The Operations Safety team is at the heart of this mission, partnering across engineering, testing, and field operations to ensure that every deployment, process, and decision reflects Nuro’s commitment to safety. As the Senior Manager of Operations Safety, you’ll lead the team responsible for building and maintaining the systems, processes, and culture that enable safe scaling of our driverless technology. Your work will directly influence how Nuro earns public trust and delivers on its mission.

About the Role

Nuro is seeking a visionary Senior Manager of Operations Safety to architect, lead, and scale our operational safety programs. In this strategic leadership role, you will be an owner of Nuro’s Safety Management System (SMS), championing a culture of safety excellence across the organization. You will build and guide a high-performing Ops Safety team, ensuring our revolutionary autonomous vehicle technology is operated and scaled with the highest standards of safety and responsibility. This role is a critical pillar within Autonomy Operations, requiring deep cross-functional partnership with leaders across Hardware, Autonomy, Systems, and Public Trust to define safety readiness and drive operational excellence as we deploy in increasingly complex environments.

About the Work

  • Lead implementation of safety principles, policies, and processes across operational domains to proactively identify and mitigate risk.
  • Build and scale the Ops Safety function: Establish a clear vision, structure, and direction for the Ops Safety team, ensuring that safety considerations are integrated into operational planning and execution.
  • Develop safety policies, tools, and training: Establish scalable frameworks, documentation, and learning programs to embed a consistent safety culture across all operational teams.
  • Lead incident response and investigations: Build end-to-end processes for incident reporting, analysis, and corrective actions; ensure trends are captured and mitigations are institutionalized.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally: Partner closely with Hardware, Autonomy, Systems, Public Trust, Product, and Partner Success to ensure operational safety requirements are integrated into product design and validation.
  • Support validation and deployment: Oversee Ops participation in testing and validation of new hardware, software, and controls; ensure readiness for safe on-road operation.
  • Enhance external confidence by collaborating with Nuro’s Safety Office and Public Trust team to effectively communicate operational safety practices to regulators, partners, and the public.

About You

  • Experienced safety leader with 7+ years in systems or operational safety engineering within safety-critical industries such as aerospace, automotive, oil and gas, defense, or robotics.
  • Expert in hazard and risk analysis, with proficiency in either FMEA, STPA, HAZOP, HARA, and FTA, and a firm grasp of Human Factors principles.
  • Technical depth in EE, ME, CS, CE,  or related engineering disciplines, with the ability to engage deeply with cross-functional technical teams.
  • Proven ability to establish, manage, or scale Safety Management Systems, policies, and training programs in complex operational settings.
  • Experienced in leading incident investigations, determining root causes, and developing robust mitigations.
  • Skilled communicator and influencer who can drive alignment, accountability, and cultural adoption of safety practices across functions.
  • Thrives in ambiguity and applies first-principles thinking, curiosity, and pragmatism to develop practical solutions in a fast-moving, novel domain.

Bonus Points

  • Experience in the autonomous vehicle industry and familiarity with safety challenges in autonomy testing and deployment.
  • Advanced degree in Engineering, Systems Engineering, or Engineering Management.
  • Experience contributing to Safety Cases or working with regulators on safety documentation.
  • Background in operational readiness or test safety for complex systems.

At Nuro, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. For this position, the reasonably expected base pay range is between $160,360 and $240,540 for the level at which this job has been scoped. Your base pay will depend on several factors, including your experience, qualifications, education, location, and skills. In the event that you are considered for a different level, a higher or lower pay range would apply. This position is also eligible for an annual performance bonus, equity, and a competitive benefits package.
