Senior Geomodeller – Hybrid
The Opportunity
The Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) Branch of the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is currently looking for a Senior Geomodeller to join the Geoscience Innovation team. This role is ideal for a creative and future-focused technical expert who thrives in collaborative environments and enjoys mentoring others while pushing the boundaries of digital geoscience.
The Senior Geomodeller is a critical member of the multi-disciplinary and collaborative team developing 3D geological models at a variety of scales, from specific regions of the province to the provincial-scale (Geological Framework of Alberta, GFA). The GFA provides a spatial realization of all geological entities, water, minerals and hydrocarbon resources within a dynamic and evergreen 3D model. The Senior Geomodeller will provide technical and strategic leadership to a dynamic group of geomodellers, geoscientists and geostatisticians responsible for developing and updating multi-scalar 3D geological models for a variety of purposes including reconstruction of depositional systems, assessment of energy resources, and pore space management. Development and application of 3D multi-disciplinary models that can inform and support technical projects, initiatives, investigations and decision-making by colleagues in AGS and the AER, the Government of Alberta, stakeholders, and communities across the province is a critical component of the role.
What your day-to-day will look like:
Perform in an advanced technical role conducting strategic surface and subsurface modelling work designed to support geoscientific and engineering issues facing Alberta, which is guided by the AGS operational plan.
Provide geomodelling solutions, advice, guidance, and leadership on large multi-disciplinary projects which may span outside of immediate job area to support both short-term and long-term Branch or Division level decision making.
As a senior level technical specialist, this position is expected to provide technical mentorship to staff across the AER and will be responsible for providing technical reviews with constructive feedback to other technical experts. The position is regularly called on by other branches within the AER or other departments within the Government of Alberta to provide support to various initiatives or decision making requiring geological modelling expertise.
The position may also be responsible for providing direction, leadership, and guidance on large multi-disciplinary projects requiring a broader range of geoscience expertise.
Accountable for delivering results through publication of technical reports, models, digital information, and peer-reviewed literature. Prepare findings for internal and external audiences including non-AER stakeholders, as well as within AER.
Actively manage data acquired or produced during AGS project work and ensure all data and information is managed, stored, protected and described according to best-practice standards.
What we’re looking for in you:
Master’s or Ph.D. in Geology, Engineering, or Geoscience-related discipline.
10+ years of progressive related experience in geomodelling and/or related field of study; other technical training with equivalent levels of experience/expertise may be considered.
Strong working knowledge of a variety of 3D modelling software packages and 3D modelling algorithms used to create geological models for different geological intervals in western Canada.
Experience modeling a range of depositional systems/resource play types at different scales and with different types of data.
Ability to lead the development of unique solutions for integrating a variety of geospatial data types to support complex and multidisciplinary projects and AER investigations.
Familiar with developing or augmenting code (i.e. python) to support machine learning or deep learning applications.
Understanding geological pore space issues as it relates to subsurface fluid flow (i.e. disposal, brine hosted minerals, and geothermal) in Alberta is an asset.
Ability to solve undefined problems and present and communicate complex technical information to a variety of audiences.
Ability to apply new innovative and novel approaches to geomodelling to multiply our impact.
Ability to respond to changing priorities and timelines, handle multiple tasks, and lead risk informed decision making.
Ability to work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders, both internal and external.
Ability to share knowledge, teach skills, and explain concepts.
Strong written and verbal communication, including technical writing.
APEGA membership or eligibility is an asset.
