CORE JOB SUMMARY
The Research Associate 1, GAB supports research activities for the assigned division by conducting laboratory experiments on assigned research projects. Moreover, the incumbent operates with the goal of advancing his/her expertise through continued education, training, and research.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

6. Collects, prepares, analyzes, dissects, and evaluates specimens or tissue cultures.
7. Operates and maintains laboratory equipment.
8. Performs a variety of routine assays, tests, and studies.
9. Performs calculations to complete research test results, collects data, and performs statistical analysis of laboratory results.
10. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Department Specific Functions

  • Assist in rodent models of spinal cord injury, including pre- and post-operative care, behavioral testing, and recovery monitoring
  • Perform microsurgical procedures, including cervical spinal cord injury surgeries and stereotaxic injections under supervision
  • Conduct in vivo and ex vivo electrophysiological recordings to assess respiratory and motor circuit function
  • Carry out genotyping and colony management, including tail snips, DNA extraction, PCR, and data logging
  • Support immunohistochemistry, tissue sectioning, and sample preparation for microscopy
  • Operate and maintain confocal and epifluorescence microscopes, including image acquisition and analysis
  • Maintain and update standard operating procedures (SOPs) and assist in development and refinement of lab protocols
  • Prepare and manage experimental reagents, buffers, and stock solutions
  • Maintain accurate lab notebooks and digital records to ensure compliance with institutional and funding agency protocols
  • Collaborate with lab members on data collection, organization, and analysis
  • Ensure compliance with IACUC, biosafety, and institutional guidelines, including proper animal handling and care

Department Specific Qualifications                                                                                      

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience, Biology, Physiology, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field

Certification and Licensing:

N/A      

Experience:

Coursework or research experience in neurobiology, motor control, or spinal cord physiology

Prior participation in an undergraduate research program or honors thesis involving laboratory-based neuroscience

Training in animal research methodsmolecular biology, or neuroanatomy is a plus

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

Technical Proficiency in basic lab techniques including pipetting, reagent preparation, tissue handling, and microscopy

Strong organizational and documentation skills for maintaining lab records and following protocols

Collaborative mindset with excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work in a team-oriented research environment

Demonstrated initiative, adaptability, and problem-solving ability in a research setting

Commitment to ethical animal research and adherence to institutional safety and compliance standards
