The Position

This role is in Analytical Data Science, a core function within Product Development Data Sciences (PDD) that provides strategic leadership and scientific rigor across Development at Roche. PDD Analytical Data Science teams are mobilized across the portfolio to generate data-driven insights, identify opportunities for scale, and implement impactful solutions.

PDD Analytical Data Science is recognized as a leading hub for top industry talent, operating as an agile workforce to deliver regulatory commitments across the portfolio. We identify, influence, and adopt industry-leading digital and automation solutions, develop analytical approaches to support exploratory analyses, and align statistical programming practices across both early- and late-stage clinical development.

The Opportunity

The DSX Lead is responsible for leading the team that develops and maintains scalable tools, environments, and workflows that power statistical computing, automation, and insight generation across Product Development Data Sciences (PDD). This role combines strategic oversight with people leadership, managing a multidisciplinary team to deliver next-generation capabilities such as the OCEAN platform. Working closely with stakeholders across Biostatistics, Analytical Data Science, Informatics, and IT, the Lead ensures that DSX solutions are robust, compliant, and aligned with evolving clinical and scientific needs.

  • You define and drive the strategic direction for DSX platforms and tools that support statistical computing, workflow automation, and insight generation across PDD

  • You oversee the development, scaling, and maintenance of core statistical computing infrastructure and systems, ensuring performance, compliance, and alignment with evolving scientific and regulatory requirements

  • You guide investment and architectural decisions related to statistical computing environments, reusable code libraries, and automation frameworks

  • You ensure seamless integration of DSX solutions with other enterprise systems and workflows through close collaboration with partners in Biostatistics, Analytical Data Science, Informatics, and IT

  • You champion best practices in scientific software development, reproducibility, and modular design to enhance team productivity and user adoption

  • You monitor emerging technologies and evolving user needs to inform long-term platform evolution and innovation roadmap

  • You represent DSX capabilities and priorities in cross-functional governance forums and strategic planning processes

  • You enable scalable delivery models and technical standards that support diverse analytical use cases, from regulatory outputs to exploratory insights

  • You lead and develop a multidisciplinary team of data scientists, platform engineers, and junior leaders responsible for delivering DSX capabilities across PDD

  • You set team priorities, manage performance, and ensure alignment with short- and long-term strategic goals

  • You oversee hiring, onboarding, and talent development to build and sustain technical excellence and a strong culture of collaboration and innovation

  • You plan and allocate resources across DSX initiatives, ensuring optimal use of team capacity to meet organizational needs

  • You foster an inclusive, high-performing team environment that values scientific rigor, continuous learning, and cross-functional partnership

  • You serve as a mentor and advisor to technical leaders and individual contributors, supporting their career growth and leadership development

  • You represent DSX in broader leadership forums and partner with stakeholders to ensure organizational visibility, alignment, and influence

  • You contribute to department-level planning, budgeting, and reporting processes, ensuring effective execution and resource stewardship

Who you are:

  • You hold a Master’s or PhD in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Bioinformatics, Engineering, or a related quantitative field

  • You have a minimum of 12 years of relevant experience in data science, scientific software development, or statistical computing, including 3+ years in a formal people leadership role

  • You have demonstrated success leading high-performing technical teams in the development and delivery of scalable platforms or tooling in a scientific or regulated environment

  • You have a proven ability to align platform strategy with organizational needs, translating user requirements into sustainable, high-impact solutions

  • You bring a strong understanding of scientific computing practices, including workflow automation, reproducibility, and platform integration

  • You have experience working cross-functionally with stakeholders in Biostatistics, Analytical Data Science, Informatics, and IT to drive platform adoption and value

  • You demonstrate capacity for independent thinking and ability to make decisions based upon sound principles

  • You bring excellent strategic agility including problem-solving and critical thinking skills, and agility that extends beyond the technical domain

  • You demonstrate respect for cultural differences when interacting with colleagues in the global workplace

  • You have excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to engage effectively with technical experts, people leaders, and senior stakeholders

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience leading large-scale, cross-functional technical programs or platform transformations in a scientific, clinical, or regulated environment

  • Familiarity with statistical computing infrastructure (e.g., containerized environments, workflow orchestration, cloud-based architectures) and their application in life sciences

  • Strong understanding of the end-to-end product development lifecycle and how data science platforms support regulatory and exploratory use cases

  • Ability to influence tooling standards, technical policies, and investment decisions across functions and geographies

  • Track record of mentoring technical leaders and developing organizational capability in data science tooling or scientific computing

  • Engagement with external communities (e.g., open-source, regulatory working groups, technology consortia) to bring best practices and innovation into Roche

  • Demonstrated success building inclusive, collaborative teams and fostering a culture of trust, accountability, and continuous improvement

  • Ability to anticipate organizational and industry shifts and proactively evolve platform and talent strategies to meet future needs

  • Deep understanding of drug development processes and how statistical programming and data science tools contribute to decision-making across clinical phases
