Coordinator, Career Counseling

The School of Medicine is currently recruiting a Coordinator for Career Counseling in the Office of Student Academic Affairs. The Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the career counseling program ensuring that all medical students receive assistance with receiving unbiased information regarding career planning, career exploration, specialty descriptions, residency match process, ERAS, personal statements, curriculum vita development and alternative career option resources for MD’s. The Coordinator will work with the career counselors to develop, plan, implement, and evaluate career counseling and guidance program that includes career, personal, and social development. The coordinator will oversee scheduling for the career advising program. In addition, the coordinator will serve as a career counselor at 50% FTE while providing administrative oversight at 50% FTE.

  • Develop and oversee online scheduling
  • Develop and oversee the career counseling website in coordination with the marketing team for the school of medicine
  • General advising about career exploration, including clarifying goals and priorities
  • Assisting with narrowing down career options.
  • Advising opportunities to improve residency application competitiveness.
  • Facilitating discussions on career paths beyond clinical practice
  • Facilitating communication with/between specialty residency advisors and/or other faculty mentors
  • Coordinating with the AAMC Careers in Medicine (CiM) program, an online resource that helps students explore their personality traits, skills, interests, and values. The program supports a structured approach to self-assessment and career planning.
  • Utilizing content from the AAMC Careers in Medicine Specialty Pages, which offer comprehensive information on 127 medical specialties and subspecialties. Topics include the nature of work, desired personal characteristics, training pathways, residency requirements, match results, workforce data, compensation, relevant journals, and links to specialty organizations.
  • Guiding fourth-year students through the residency application process, including registration with ERAS (or other applicable services) and participation in one or more Match programs.
  • Providing individualized support throughout the Match process, including strategic planning, application guidance, and preparation for interviews.
  • Assisting students with crafting personal statements by offering one-on-one guidance and feedback. Additionally, coordinate an annual workshop on preparing a professional curriculum vitae (CV), helping students present their experiences and qualifications effectively.

  • Strong composition and editing skills. 

          Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Preferred:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of institutional and School of Medicine policies, procedures and organization structure
  • Knowledge of accounting principles and procedures including budgetary process
  • Demonstrated knowledge of office procedures and proficiency in various PC based word processing and spreadsheet applications to include Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint
  • Professional attitude, and ability to maintain confidentiality. Desired abilities to conduct collegial interactions with students, staff, and campus community  

Education and Experience Required:

  • Bachelor’s of Science degree in Education or related field.

·Experience with medical student education.

  • Experience with project management and program coordination.

·Experience in faculty development.

·Experience as a manager with direct reports.

Education and Experience Preferred:

·Master’s degree in Education or related field preferred.
