This position supports our workers' compensation line of business, Eastern Alliance, and candidates should be located within 2 hours drive time to Lancaster PA in order to meet the business needs of the position. Candidates do not have to reside in PA - can also reside in DE, MD or NJ.

This position will report to the Lancaster PA office for moments that matter, including two teamwork days per month, plus additional meetings, trainings and special events as necessary.

We may fill this position at a higher/lower level depending upon qualifications of the selected candidate.

The primary responsibility of the Senior Underwriter is to execute the strategic initiatives and financial goals of the Underwriting Department in support of the Company’s revenue and profitability objectives and overall business plan. This position provides focused customer service and support for all commercial underwriting transactions within delegated authority. This position operates autonomously, conducts individual and group training, acts as a mentor, supports the underwriting referral process and helps to develop and assist with the implementation of operational objectives.

What you'll do:

  • 35% - Within approved authority, analyze risks for new and renewal business in support of the company’s Underwriting objectives; makes decisions in support of profitability about accepting, modifying or declining all new and renewal business within the timelines set by regulatory and Company guidelines. Assumes lead underwriting responsibilities for Inova® programs as needed and demonstrates a working knowledge of retrospectively rated and large deductible products.
  • 15% - Perform functions necessary for the accurate, timely issuance of quotations, policies, renewals, endorsements, cancellations, non-renewals, risk management surveys and required file documentation by working collaboratively with agency partners, associate underwriters and all internal colleagues.
  • 15% - Cultivate and develop high quality company-agency and company-client working relationships by visiting and communicating with agents and risks on a regular and timely basis as necessitated by business needs and company guidelines; identify any new alternative insurance program opportunities communicating closely with the Inova® team.
  • 10% - Regularly uses quantification tools to effectively champion ecovery® initiatives by working collaboratively with agents, clients, claims, and risk management consultants to ensure proper return to wellness guidelines and procedures are established, followed and achieved.
  • 5% - Actively participate in and lead team meetings to discuss large and/or adverse accounts. Develop and execute renewal and account management strategies including the dissemination of competitive information. Organize and lead Stewardship reviews for large accounts in accordance with the Company’s client service model.
  • 5% - Manage book of business and agency related results and concerns by monitoring reports and communications and facilitate collaboration between Underwriters, Claims, Risk Management, and others as necessary.
  • 5% - Review monthly reports and goals and implement necessary changes to ensure strategic initiatives are being met.
  • 5% - Offer mentoring and guidance for assigned Associate Underwriter and less experience Underwriters in the organization.
  • 5% - Assist with company projects as assigned and continue professional growth and development through the attendance and participation in insurance related events and functions.

What we're looking for:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, insurance or related field is required. Eight years of industry related experience plus a CPCU, CIC or CRM designation can replace the bachelor’s degree.
  • A minimum of five years of insurance underwriting experience is required. Workers’ compensation underwriting experience and the active pursuit of professional development and the completion of insurance designations (CPCU, CIC, CRM, AU, ARM, AINS, etc.) is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in underwriting skills through achieving targeted financial and operational results.
  • Demonstrated ability to earn underwriting authority and work independently.
  • Proven ability to establish effective internal and external relationships.
  • Ability to attend insurance and industry/business functions to promote and present a positive image of the Company.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office computer applications; ability to learn new computer software applications.
  • Advanced analytical ability, in order to analyze and interpret information; and make profitable decisions about risks.
  • Attention to detail in processing policy information, establishing priorities, and meeting deadlines.
  • Solid analytical and problem-solving skills, including formulating logical and objective conclusions and the ability to think strategically.
  • Ability to assess the urgency and importance of a situation and take appropriate action.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally both verbally and in writing with various constituencies and at all levels; both in and outside of the organization including agency partners, outside customers and clients.

Position Salary Range

$64,930.00 - $107,146.00

The salary range displayed represents the entirety of the pay grade for this position. Most candidates will start in the bottom half of the range. Factors that may be used to determine your actual salary include your specific skills, how many years of experience you have, your location and comparison to other team members already in this role.
