Working knowledge of web accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1 AA) and the ability to design and code for inclusive access.

Experience providing technical leadership and mentorship within a web development team.

Proficiency with version control and collaborative workflows using GitHub or similar tools.

Familiarity with continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD) processes and cloud-hosted environments.

Job Description:

Summary

The Iowa State University Library is hiring a Web Services Team Lead (Web Developer III). Based in the beautiful Parks Library at the center of campus, this position provides technical leadership for the Library’s web platforms. The role focuses on front-end development and user experience across the Library’s web ecosystem, including the university’s Drupal website, vendor-hosted systems, and custom applications that connect people to collections and services.

At Iowa State University Library, you’ll join a collaborative team that manages and improves the web platforms that connect people to knowledge, in an environment that values shared problem-solving and steady improvement. You’ll help shape how students, researchers, and the public find and use information, working with colleagues across the Library and campus to support one of the university’s most visible and trusted resources.

The Team Lead will develop and maintain code, build shared frameworks, and help ensure platforms are reliable and accessible. They will supervise web development staff and student employees, lead user experience projects informed by testing, analytics, and audits, and serve as a technical liaison with vendors to coordinate front-end changes, integrations, and accessibility improvements.

The successful candidate will have a user-centered focus, be skilled in organization and time management, and possess the ability to interact effectively with library staff and the university community, work independently as well as collaboratively in a rapidly changing, team-based environment. 

What You’ll Do

  • Lead and mentor web development staff and student employees.

  • Develop and maintain front-end code (HTML, CSS/SCSS, JavaScript) for responsive, accessible, and consistent interfaces.

  • Build shared frameworks and reusable components to support sustainable, consistent design.

  • Lead user experience improvements through usability testing, analytics, and interface audits.

  • Collaborate with Library colleagues, campus IT, and vendors on front-end changes, integrations, and accessibility updates.

  • Partner with backend developers on API integrations and data-driven features.

  • Document development practices to ensure continuity and maintainability.

Level Guidelines

  • Senior-level position possessing high-level professional and/or technical skills working independently under minimal supervision to support ISU’s mission and department or work unit goals

  • Applies senior-level professional knowledge and expertise to work requiring greater latitude

  • Solves moderately complex problems and regularly exercises judgment to determine appropriate action

  • Regularly exercises judgment to resolve problems and determine appropriate action on a broad set of issue and problems. May provide recommendations regarding problems/issues outside the bounds of defined procedures and practices

  • Responds to complicated inquiries, provides training, and provides direction to lower-level staff

  • May provide supervision for one to two other staff (i.e., leads a small work team)

  • May lead projects for which well-defined practices and procedures may not exist

  • Provides guidance to students
