The Vice President, Construction Projects is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing all aspects of data center construction projects.
This role combines strategic planning, project management, leadership, and technical expertise to ensure that data center facilities are built to meet operational needs, industry standards, and budget constraints.
This senior leadership role drives a collaborative and innovative culture across their team, focused on operational excellence.
Key responsibilities:- Develops and executes a strategic plan for data center construction that aligns with the organization's overall business objectives. This includes capacity planning, technology roadmaps, and long-term facility expansion strategies.
- Oversees a portfolio of data center construction projects, from initiation to completion, ensuring that they are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.
- Allocates and manages resources, including budgets, people, contractors, and equipment, to support data center construction projects across the organization.
- Provides technical oversight and guidance on data center facility designs, ensuring that they meet operational, security, scalability, and sustainability requirements. Collaborates with architects and engineers.
- Manages and monitors budgets for data center construction projects, tracking expenditures, optimizing costs, and reporting financial performance to senior leadership.
- Identifies and mitigates potential risks associated with data center construction projects, proactively addressing issues that may impact project success.
- Establishes and enforces robust quality control measures to ensure that construction work adheres to design specifications, industry standards, and best practices. Conducts inspections and audits.
- Ensures that all data center construction projects comply with relevant local, national, and international regulations, building codes, and industry standards.
- Selects, negotiates with, and manages external vendors, suppliers, and construction contractors to ensure that they meet project requirements and timelines.
- Collaborates with internal teams, stakeholders, and executive leadership to align data center construction projects with broader business goals and priorities. Provides regular updates on project status and milestones.
- Promotes and enforces safety protocols, environmental responsibility, and sustainability practices in data center construction projects.
To thrive in this role, you need to have:- In-depth knowledge of data center facilities, infrastructure, best practices, and emerging trends in the data center industry.
- Substantial understanding of electrical systems, HVAC, cooling technologies, networking, and security systems relevant to data center construction.
- Strong financial acumen, budgeting skills, and experience managing large construction project budgets.
- Substantial leadership skills with experience in managing cross-functional teams and large-scale construction projects.
- Substantial communication and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration, stakeholder management, and reporting to senior leadership.
- Substantial analytical and problem-solving abilities to address complex challenges associated with data center construction.
- A commitment to staying updated with industry trends, technological advancements, and best practices in data center construction.
Academic qualifications and certifications:- Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Electrical Engineering or related field.
- Advanced business degree such as an MBA is advantageous.
- PMP (Project Management Professional) certification is preferred.
Required experience:- Substantial demonstrated experience gained in a similar role within a global IT services organization.
- Substantial demonstrated experience in project management methodologies, tools, and practices
- Substantial demonstrated experience managing data center construction projects.
- Substantial demonstrated experience managing and leading data construction project resources.
