Job Description:

The Dermatology Service oversees daily, referral and second opinion appointments for dermatology patients of the hospital.  Dermatology Technicians contribute to patient care, client communication and provide support for a variety of general and specialized procedures.  Technicians provide instruction to veterinary students in technical procedures, hospital policy, and organize and manage daily clinical tasks to enhance service efficiency and effectiveness. In collaboration with faculty, veterinary students and veterinarians-in-training, support the service and teaching missions of the teaching hospital.

Veterinary Technician 1

40% Assist with organizing and facilitating Dermatology out-patient receiving, in-patient diagnostics and therapeutics. Assist students and clinicians with various diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Assist with venipuncture, intradermal skin testing for allergy, skin biopsy, other minor dermatologic procedures, and obtaining specimens. Assist with set-up for and assisting in routine outpatient procedures such as biopsy and video otoscopy, including necessary sedation. This includes but is not limited to: submission of laboratory work, submission of anesthesia / imaging / laser scheduling, sample submission, preparation and cleaning of necessary equipment and supplies. Facilitates the upload of patient images into electronic medical records. 

30% Assist with organizing and maintaining dermatology library and resource files. Provide relevant handouts to clients and students. Assist dermatology resident in maintenance of skin testing allergens and equipment. Be involved with ongoing educational activities within the service (journal club, textbook rounds, histopathology rounds) as time permits.  Assist in the setup of materials and supplies for pre-clinical student laboratories. Assist pre-clinical students in the performance of routine dermatologic diagnostic procedures. Assist with clinical research. Complete necessary training to successfully monitor animals while undergoing treatment. Complete training for daily/weekly/monthly maintenance of the equipment. 

20% Assist with client communication (internal and external).  This includes face to face, telephone, email and other methods of communication to gather facts, provide information and schedule appointments. Assist with client instruction in the performance of therapeutic procedures such as ear cleanings and immunotherapy administration. When needed, assist with client / patient admission and discharge.

5% Clean, inventory and stock equipment /  supplies and maintain organization in assigned area. Keep inventory, perform general maintenance of equipment.
Train and participate in blood bank including on call for blood bank; train for and participate in holiday coverage and emergency response. 

5% Other duties as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree OR Associate’s degree in veterinary technology OR CVT or equivalent OR 3 years of experience in a working environment with similar duties

Preferred Qualifications:

CVT or equivalent with 1 year of applicable experience

Veterinary Technician 2

Preferred Qualifications:

CVT or equivalent with 3 years of applicable experience

Veterinary Technician 3

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree with 4 years of related experience OR Associate’s degree in veterinary technology with 4 years experience; OR Certification as a vet tech or equivalent with 4 years experience; OR 7 Years of experience in a working environment with similar duties.

Preferred Qualifications:

CVT or equivalent with 5 years of applicable experience

Special or physical Qualifications:

Per PS 18- This position is a part of the Emergency Response Personnel - these personnel are linked with the hospital during any emergency response event and are expected to report in and perform as outlined in the emergency response plan.

Required to work a variety of shifts including nights, weekends, holidays, and "on-call"/relief shifts.


Required to be capable of lifting more than 50 pounds, standing or walking for prolonged periods, able to reach above and below the shoulder, vision (near sight), vision (far sight), kneel or sit on the floor, push/pulling, grasping, climbing, crawling bending, squatting, and/or twisting.
