The Ultrasound Intern is competent to perform all diagnostic procedures for the diagnosis of specific diseases or conditions under direct and indirect supervision of an Ultrasound Technologist.The following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job. The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below. In addition, specific functions may change from time to time:
Competent to perform all procedures within the Ultrasound Section of the Radiology Department
Competent in technical operations of all equipment
Assess the patients, review orders/chart as appropriate to confirm reason of exam
Ensure pertinent patient symptoms and clinical history are documented and a signed consent form is present if needed
Prepare patients for procedure, answer any questions and effectively communicate with the supervising radiologist for special instructions and/or questions regarding exam protocol
Responsible for the prompt completion and accurate recording of exam begin and end time in the Radiology Information System (RIS) to ensure timely access to study by the radiologist
Provide safe environment to include infection control guidelines, universal precautions and patient safety goals
Monitor timeliness of exams and quality of care based on established department goals, striving for continuous quality improvement
Perform QA of exams (correct order, accurate/complete image annotation, correct laterality) prior to sending to radiologist for interpretation
Actively participate in department’s Performance Improvement Projects

The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this job:
High school diploma or equivalent required
Graduate of an accredited Sonography certificate or diploma program required
ARRT (Sonography) or ARDMS Registry eligible required
Interns must be registered by either ARDMS or ARRT (Sonography) within 12 months of internship required
Current AHA BLS required
1 year experience preferred
Technical skills and expertise in performing diagnostic and vascular sonography
Positive interpersonal skills

Knowledge of growth and development and understands the range of treatment needed for all age groups
Ability to provide care based on the patient’s developmental needs
Effective patient care and interacts effectively with patients of all ages
Ability to communicate orally

Mobility to assume awkward positions and respond to emergency situations
Ability to stand for long periods of time
Ability to bend and lift up to 100 pounds, carry objects up to 50 pounds
Position may involve skin, eye, or mucous membrane contact with blood or other potentially infectious material
