Purpose of Role

The Technician, Library Collections and Procurement is responsible for the day-to-day operational and technical procedures for the print/online library.

The primary job functions for this role are:

  • Acquisitions
  • Serials control
  • General maintenance of the library premises and collections
  • Reference Service

Specific Areas of Responsibility

The Technician, Library Collections and Procurement is responsible acquisitions, serials control, technical systems, general maintenance of the library premises and collections and the reference service.  The Technician, Library Collections and Procurement is responsible for meeting the responsibilities of the role.

Key Responsibilities

Acquisitions

  • Ordering of books and other materials 
  • Cataloguing

Serials control

  • Mail processing
  • New materials checking in the library system: serials, loose-leaf releases
  • Distributes print consolidations, desk books and e-version of titles to lawyers
  • Looseleaf filing

Reference Service

  • User support and instruction in how to use the library (catalogue, organization of collection, access to databases)
  • Arranging inter-library loans (BLG, local firms, courthouse libraries, government)
  • Supporting online document delivery service
  • Answers routine reference questions

General maintenance of the library premises and collections

  • Maintains the book circulation system
  • Shelving and maintaining the general tidiness of the library
  • Firm archives – organizing and inventory of materials
  • Binding and book repairs

Collaboration with other functions

  • Project assignments to further the national library model
  • Provide assistance or back-up in the provision of other Library Services to lawyers

Key Competencies

  • Library technician diploma or equivalent
  • Highly-developed interpersonal, communication, organizational and time-management skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with people at all levels
  • Strong customer service orientation
  • Advanced computer skills
