IDEXX

Technical Lead Data Services

Auckland, New Zealand Full time

IDEXX invests heavily in Veterinary Software to deliver the first vertical SaaS platform for Animal Health. We're scaling our impact and expertise to handle tomorrow's challenges, with Auckland as our global software center of excellence—where we craft a portfolio of cloud platforms and apps that keep vets and pets thriving.

We're on the hunt for a Technical Lead to mature and lead our new Data Services squad right here in Auckland. Your mission: Drive the vision for streaming data from our ecosystem of cloud veterinary products, building infrastructure, schemas, and frameworks that ensure credible info flows efficiently and securely. No data science wizardry required—this is about engineering rock-solid data pipelines from disparate sources, aligning with enterprise architecture, and collaborating with stakeholders to evolve our data ecosystem.

Predominantly powered by AWS, you'll design architectures for capturing, integrating, organising, and maintaining data, doubling down on Kafka for real-time, event-driven streaming that keeps our veterinary world in sync. Dive into Go and TypeScript for robust backends, cloud-native setups, and seamless integrations with AWS services. With a DevOps mindset, you'll automate CI/CD, IaC, and reliability in distributed systems—mastering event-driven practices to handle scale like a pro. If you're fired up about herding data cats in a fast-paced, domain-driven world with Kafka at the heart, let's chat!

Key Responsibilities:

  • Inspire, mentor, and grow a cross-functional squad to deliver end-to-end data value streams, embedding engineering excellence that aligns with our roadmap—especially in Kafka streaming and event-driven architectures.
  • Define, own and run the ecosystems common master data model for streaming data, you have the opportunity to help shape a common data model across the organisation.
  • Build engaged teams (starting with one squad), balancing tech quality, morale, and user outcomes alongside Product Managers and Architects.
  • Lead by example in data engineering or architecture, instilling best practices in Kafka pipelines, AWS integrations, and event sourcing to empower your team and scale IDEXX's data ecosystem.

What You Need to Succeed:

  • Bachelor's in Computer Science/Info Systems or equivalent experience/qualifications.
  • 7+ years as a Software Engineer, with proven technical leadership.
  • Expertise in evolving cultures toward agility, automated testing, and DevSecOps.
  • Strong in systems/software design, modern web/cloud tech (e.g., React, Go, TypeScript, Java), and deep hands-on with Kafka for event-driven streaming, plus AWS services for scalable infra.
  • Agile mastery (Scrum, Kanban, etc.), plus a passion for building resilient data schemas and real-time pipelines.

What you can expect from us:

  • Structured onboarding, induction, ongoing training and transparent performance driven professional development
  • Rewarding salary packages including lucrative incentive schemes for all
