The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) manages the efficient flow of electricity on more than 11,000 circuit-miles of high-voltage transmission lines, dispatching power from hundreds of generating units across the state.
The NYISO’s Operations department invites applications for a full-time System Operator Trainer.
The System Operator Trainer will develop, deliver and document power system operations training for NYISO operations staff and other operating entities within New York. Training is delivered in classroom, simulation, computer based and OJT formats. Instruction is provided in self-study, one-on-one, small group and large group forums.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES
- Use Systematic Approach to Training (SAT) to develop training for various system operators.
- Using Adult Learning Theory, deliver virtual and in person training to internal and external NERC certified operators for continuous education credit hours.
- Perform needs analysis to determine the training needs of trainees included within the various System Operator Training programs participants for applicable training modalities.
- Perform training needs analysis by interviewing control room operators, shift managers, and/ or subject matter experts (SMEs) to identify needs for training.
- Perform post training evaluations of training effectiveness soliciting feedback through surveys and other assessment means, analyzing results, and revising training material to make improvements.
- Collaborate with the training staffs of NPCC Control Areas and New York Control Area (NYCA) Transmission Owners to deliver joint and coordinated training.
- Collaborate with Grid Operations staff to review and update Control Room Operator tasks when necessary to ensure compliance with NERC Standard requirements.
- Document and maintain training records for audit and compliance purposes in accordance with NERC and NYISO requirements utilizing various compliance tools and software programs.
- Support integration of processes, tools and displays into system operations through participation in projects of varying scope including User Acceptance Testing (UAT).
- Participate as a part of internal and external training committees and technical working groups.
- Provide technical and/or training support to various NYISO committees and departments.
- Participate as Operations SME for Market Structures for market participant training.
- Participate in regional and national forums on power system operations training.
- Recruit and assist internal and external subject matter experts, as required.
- Using lesson plans prepared by others, prepare for and conduct training classes during the absence of the assigned instructor.
- Participate in Audits as needed.
Qualifications include:
- Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred. Formal training in instructional skills and training methods desired. Equivalent experience will be considered.
- Seven years of related experience in a technical training facility, corporate training organizations, high school, trade school, college or military teaching experience. Demonstrated ability to deliver training. Alternative experience without a degree may be considered.
- Ability to learn, apply and describe complex technical concepts or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
NERC Reliability Coordinator certification preferred. Accredited trainer documentation and/or educational certification (Education degree, AMA, Langevin or equivalent) preferred.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to develop e-learning modules using articulate or similar software.
- Ability to read, analyze and interpret technical or engineering documents. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from staff and external industry partners.
- Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
- Ability to solve practical and complex problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written oral, diagram or schedule form.
- Intermediate competency in Windows operating environment using MS Office applications including PowerPoint, e-mail and Internet programs.
- Ability to operate simulation systems such as used in aviation, power plant operations or military.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit and use hands to perform routine office tasks. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds. WORK ENVIRONMENT
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Contact with staff and public will occur. Travel may be required to attend and/or conduct meetings, conferences and training. This position may require work on nights, weekends or holidays.
