The Opportunity

The Strategy Design for Experiential Patient Insights plays a critical role in embedding Genentech’s enterprise capability for capturing and applying lived patient and caregiver experience across this product lifecycle.

The Strategy Design for Experiential Patient Insights is responsible for building, operationalizing, and embedding Genentech’s enterprise capability for capturing and applying lived patient and caregiver experience across this product lifecycle. As part of the Population Health Center of Excellence (CoE), this leader works to ensure that Genentech’s internal processes and communication materials are informed by the realities, challenges, and preferences of the communities we serve.

Reporting to the Strategy and Innovation Head, this role supports the design, piloting, and scaling of systems and processes that capture and apply experiential insights into decision-making, study design, and patient-facing communications. This role leverages their knowledge of end to end drug development process to lead the strategic roadmap, pilot efforts, and enterprise scale-up of tools and processes that embed experiential patient insights as a functional asset. This includes creating immersive, human-centered learning systems, co-designing frameworks with patient communities, and institutionalizing insight-to-action workflows that translate lived experience into operational change.

Key Responsibilities

Collaboration with U.S. Medical & Phase IV Studies

  • Collaborate with U.S. Medical, Evidence for Access, and other stakeholders to design and pilot RWE-generating initiatives in Phase IV programs, providing guidance on protocol/consent design, inclusive training/trial design, and reviewing tools for journey mapping/barrier analysis, ensuring patient/caregiver insights inform internal processes to enhance real-world relevance and inclusivity.

Strategy & Roadmap

  • Partner with the Senior Director, Strategy and Innovation to define and deliver the enterprise roadmap for patient insights, including vision, adoption milestones, alignment with population health priorities, and identifying long-term ownership pathways to embed these practices into business-as-usual operations.

Insight Capture & Piloting

  • Design, pilot, and launch initiatives with Population Science, Commercial, and community partners to capture lived experience, particularly from underserved patient groups, leading immersive simulation and storytelling experiences, and developing toolkits and training materials to enable teams to apply patient insights consistently.

Governance & Advisory

  • Establish governance, operating mechanisms, and frameworks, co-created with cultural and ethical advisors, to systematically tag, manage, and distribute credible, respectful, and nuanced insights across teams, providing subject matter expertise on embedding experiential insights into research design and communications.

Measurement & Future Capability Development

  • Drive continuous improvement by monitoring emerging best practices in participatory research and patient engagement, and recommending innovations in tools and methods to strengthen the organization's use of patient insights.

  • Measure the impact of experiential insights on study design, internal decision-making, and patient-facing materials, utilizing data and feedback to refine approaches.

Who you are

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.

  • 8+ years of experience in patient engagement, participatory design, or related roles in life sciences, public health, or healthcare innovation.

  • Proven success embedding patient voice into research design, operational strategy, or enterprise transformation.

  • Skilled in systems-thinking, behavior-informed design, and participatory insight synthesis. Strong facilitation and storytelling skills, with the ability to translate abstract insights into action-oriented recommendations.

  • Demonstrated success influencing cross-functional senior stakeholders and navigating complex organizations.

  • Experience coaching and mentoring direct reports, fostering an inclusive, high-performing team culture.

Preferred Qualifications & Experience

  • Advanced degree in Public Health, Clinical Research, Medical Anthropology, Human-Centered Design, or a related field.

  • Fluency in ethical research practices, including experience working with Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) or cultural review panels.

  • Background in qualitative research methodologies and applying patient insights to healthcare innovation.

  • Experience leading enterprise-level change efforts or organizational transformation initiatives related to patient engagement.

Location and Travel Requirements

The position is located in South San Francisco. The position requires up to 25% time traveling. 

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco, CA is $154,600 - 287,000.  Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.  A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance.  This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
