Your Impact and Contribution 

As a Staff Platform Engineer in the CTO office, you'll be instrumental in architecting and building our enterprise-scale data lake on AWS, establishing the foundational platform that powers CBA's data-driven decision-making. You'll work closely with data engineering teams to create reusable patterns and frameworks for data ingestion, processing, and analytics workloads.

This is a critical data lake serving thousands of users across CommBank, and you will be at the heart of our data platform evolution. Your role will be vital in ensuring the operational excellence of data pipelines, storage systems, and analytics infrastructure, while driving the transformation from legacy data systems to modern cloud-native data architectures. Your expertise in data platform engineering, cloud-native architectures, and data governance will be essential in delivering our strategic data initiatives. 

We’re interested in hearing from people who can

  • Design and build scalable data lake infrastructure and data processing frameworks on AWS 

  • Lead the migration of legacy data systems to modern cloud-native data platforms with zero data loss 

  • Architect data ingestion patterns and frameworks for onboarding diverse data sources at scale 

  • Implement Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and automation for data platform provisioning and management 

  • Establish data governance, security, and compliance frameworks for enterprise data assets 

  • Collaborate with data engineering teams to optimize data pipeline performance and reliability 

  • Design and implement monitoring, alerting, and observability solutions for data platform health 

  • Participate in architecture reviews and provide expertise on data platform best practices 

  • Provide technical leadership in data platform strategy within the CTO office initiatives 

  • Support data platform operations through on-call rotation and incident response 

Technical skills

  • Extensive experience building and operating large-scale data lakes and data platforms 

  • Deep expertise in AWS data services (S3, EMR, Glue, Lake Formation, Redshift, Kinesis, etc.) 

  • Strong background in data engineering frameworks (Apache Spark, Kafka, Airflow, dbt) 

  • Proficiency in Infrastructure as Code tools (Terraform, CloudFormation) for data platform automation 

  • Experience with data governance, cataloging, and lineage tools (Apache Atlas, AWS Glue Catalog, etc.) 

  • Knowledge of data formats, partitioning strategies, and performance optimization techniques 

  • Familiarity with programming languages commonly used in data platforms (Python, Scala, SQL) 

  • Experience in highly regulated financial services with focus on data privacy and compliance 

  • Understanding of DataOps, MLOps, and modern data platform engineering practices 

  • Passion for solving complex data challenges and driving data platform excellence
