It’s an exciting time for communications at Macquarie University We’re looking for passionate and creative communicators to help lead our storytelling, with several key roles opening in our team.

Exciting opportunities are available for talented communications professionals to join our team as Senior Writers.

About the Role 

The Senior Writer crafts compelling content that showcases Macquarie University’s impact and achievements, driving engagement and reputation through storytelling across The Lighthouse, media and social media channels.

Key Accountabilities 

  • Write and produce original content for The Lighthouse, including features, profiles, news, explainers, and op-eds 

  • Collaborate with team members to curate engaging, audience-tailored content aligned with University messaging and adaptable for other channels 

  • Work closely with academics and researchers to craft accessible, narrative-driven stories showcasing their work 

  • Uphold editorial excellence by ensuring high-quality, consistent, and accurate writing across all materials 

  • Support Media Advisors in pitching stories to journalists and securing mainstream media coverage 

  • Build and maintain journalist relationships to enhance media coverage for the University 

  • Develop editorial calendars with the Manager and team to ensure timely, priority-aligned content publication 

  • Collaborate with creatives to produce visually engaging content that enhances written materials 

  • Contribute to content strategies that boost engagement and visibility across The Lighthouse and other channels 

  • Monitor and analyse content performance using metrics like readership, social media engagement, and media pick-up 

  • Ensure compliance with EEO and WHS regulations 

  • Perform other duties as required within the role’s classification

Selection Criteria: 

  • Extensive experience in writing, editing, and content creation, ideally within journalism, public relations, or higher education, with a strong portfolio of work across formats and platforms.  

  • Exceptional storytelling skills — visual, written, and video — with the ability to generate fresh story ideas and craft high-quality and compelling content across various media formats that resonates with diverse audiences and aligns with the organisation’s strategic goals.  

  • Experience in pitching stories and securing media coverage, with a solid understanding of media operations and established relationships with journalists and media outlets.   

  • Strong research skills with the ability to distil complex information into accessible and engaging content.  

  • A self-starter who can work independently and collaboratively across cross-functional teams within a fast-paced, dynamic environment to achieve shared objectives.   

  • Excellent attention to detail, ensuring high-quality output across all written materials and communications.  

  • Ability to generate fresh story ideas and adapt content for various formats, from long-form features to concise and compelling social media posts.
