WHAT YOU WILL DO

onX is seeking a Senior Web Engineer with a passion for building world-class design systems. Your focus will be on developing and evolving the Yellowstone Design System — a robust and flexible system of UI components and tokens that empower onX product teams to create cohesive, accessible, and high-quality experiences across our web products.

You will be part of the Yellowstone Design System team, a cross-functional group within the Core Services domain responsible for enabling designers and developers to deliver consistent and scalable product experiences. This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of onX’s multi-app ecosystem through systems thinking, elegant web component design, and a deep collaboration mindset. You will report to the Engineering Manager, Yellowstone Design System.

As an onX Senior Web Engineer, your day to day responsibilities would look like:

(Essential Job Duties)

  • Developing, maintaining, and optimizing reusable web components using Lit and related technologies.
  • Serve as the technical lead for Yellowstone on the web platform, driving architectural decisions, platform-level strategy, and communication across partner teams to ensure alignment and impact with Yellowstone.
  • Partnering closely with design, Android, iOS, and product teams to ensure design system components are cohesive, accessible, and performant across platforms.
  • Contributing to the evolution of our component architecture, ensuring flexibility, scalability, and long-term maintainability.
  • Advocating for and implementing best practices in accessibility (a11y), documentation, testing, and web performance.
  • Collaborating with internal champions to grow adoption, contributions, and awareness of the design system across onX.
  • Participating in Yellowstone’s contribution framework to support a culture of co-creation and shared ownership.
  • Supporting the automation and tooling efforts that make component updates and releases more efficient and reliable.
  • Contributing to Yellowstone’s product strategy by identifying friction points, opportunities for AI integration, and ways to enhance developer and designer experience.
  • Other ad hoc duties as assigned by the Supervisor

LOCATION

onX has created a thriving distributed workforce community across several US locations. This position can be performed from an onX corporate office, “Basecamp,” or “Connection Hub.” 

  • Corporate Offices: onX was founded in Montana with offices in Missoula and Bozeman. If you prefer to work in an office at least part of the time this is a great option.
  • Basecamps: Basecamps are established virtual workforce communities where a sizable number of distributed team members group for work, volunteering, socializing, and adventure.  
    • Our current Basecamps are located within a 90-mile radius of the following: Austin, TX; Charlotte, NC; Denver, CO; Kalispell, MT; Minneapolis, MN; Portland, OR; Salt Lake City, UT; and Seattle, WA. 
  • Connection Hubs: Connection Hub locations are smaller, emerging communities of distributed team members. 
    • Our current Connection Hubs are located within a 60-mile radius of the following: Boise, ID; Charleston, SC; Dallas/Fort Worth, TX; Phoenix, AZ; Richmond, VA; Spokane, WA; and Vermont.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in front-end or full-stack development
  • 2+ years of experience in design systems or reusable component libraries.
  • Strong proficiency with TypeScript, Web Components, HTML, and CSS.
  • Experience integrating design tokens and theming systems across multiple applications.
  • Solid understanding of accessibility, responsive design, and cross-browser compatibility.
  • Experience collaborating with designers and product managers in Figma
  • Ability to balance technical elegance with pragmatic solutions that scale across teams.
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset aligned with onX’s company values.

  • Permanent US work authorization is a condition of employment with onX. 

ADDED BONUSES

Though not required, we would be thrilled to consider candidates with any of the following:

  • Prior experience contributing to or maintaining a multi-platform design system.
  • Experience with Lit or other custom web component frameworks
  • Familiarity with Storybook, Playwright, or similar tools for component documentation and testing.
  • Knowledge of Web Vitals, performance optimization, and build tooling (e.g., Vite, Rollup, or Webpack).
  • Experience working in a distributed organization with cross-functional partners.

COMPENSATION

onX is committed to compensating all employees fairly and equitably for their contributions. For this position, applicants can expect to make between $146,000 to $182,000 upon hire. The pay range will vary based on experience, skills, certifications, and education among other factors as required in the job description. In addition, full-time onX employees are eligible for a grant of common share options with a vesting schedule and a potential annual bonus of 10% based on company performance.
