Position Summary:
Illumina is seeking an mid-career User Experience Researcher to join our growing team of researchers and designers as we build best-in-class customer experiences across all Illumina hardware and software platforms and touchpoints. You are highly skilled with user centered design and Voice of Customer (VoC) activities with the ability to drive mid to high level projects at a system-level, and have a strong emphasis on market research, human computer interaction and/or human system integration design. You can translate business objectives and customer needs into stellar customer experiences, while resolving technical and team challenges with little oversight.

You are passionate about understanding the underlying personas, use cases, goals, and pain points of our customers, and use these insights to deliver quality products and experiences.

As a member of the User Experience team, you will be a user advocate and key liaison between customers and internal teams. You are extremely organized, able to see the big picture within projects while also keeping the details top of mind. You love collaborating with others and driving teams towards success.
 

Responsibilities: 

  • Partner with product managers, development teams, designers and other stakeholders to identify research needs 

  • Develop plans for user research activities across the product lifecycle from early-stage design and product definition activities to post-release assessment 

  • Understand and incorporate business and technical requirements in research strategies 

  • Work with product teams to define user experience goals and metrics 

  • Design and conduct a variety of qualitative user research studies including user interviews, contextual inquiry, customer journey mapping, focus groups, task analysis, expert reviewsformative and summative usability tests 

  • Design and conduct a variety of quantitative user research studies, including conjoint, MaxDiff, and TURF 

  • Synthesize research findings into meaningful themes and translate these results into actionable user-centered design and product goals 

  • Evangelize research findings to stakeholders through written reports and oral presentations 

  • Advance the user experience team’s research toolbox by trying out new research techniques and deliverables

Requirements: 

  • 3-5 years of experience in user research with an emphasis on research related to software and hardware product design 

  • Masters degree in marketing, market research, human factors, human computer interactioncognitive science or closely related field is required 

  • Excellent knowledge of all aspects of user-centered design process and the ability to apply them flexibly across a variety of project types 

  • Experience with qualitative and quantitative research methods is required 

  • Solid experience with Voice of the Customer (VOC) or Jobs to be done (JTBD) research methods 

  • Experience programming basic user research surveys in Qualtrics or similar programs such as CMIX or Forsta 

  • Experience analyzing Conjoint on MaxDiff data, specifically with Sawtooth software 

  • Experience with design control and Regulatory practices and standards for medical devices or similar regulated Industries preferred 

  • Extensive experience working with product managers, designers, and engineers in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment 

  • Ability to rapidly revise and improvise research plans as needed 

  • Experience with agile methodologies a plus 

  • Proven project management skills and track record of delivering commitments on time 

  • Ability to prioritize time between multiple projects and stay flexible with changing schedules and projects while working with multiple teams 

  • A proven track record of working well with multidisciplinary and multicultural teams 

  • Excellent analytical ability especially with regard to observation of user behavior 

  • Strong oral and written communication skills  

Experience/Education:

  • Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 3 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD without experience; or equivalent work experience.

The estimated base salary range for the Senior User Experience Researcher role based in the United States of America is: $115,800 - $173,800. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. Compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including, but not limited to, an individual’s qualifications, location where the role is to be performed, internal equity, and alignment with market data. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
