Job Summary

To provide advice and support in tax practice formulation and associated best practice improvement tactics; enabling the provision of specialist expertise.

Job Description

  • Financial and management reporting: Review and prepare relevant financial and management reports relating to Indirect Tax

  • Indirect Tax returns: Review of the ABSA Bank Limited VAT Return (monthly) from the consolidated divisional tax packs and additional information obtained from the business units, and submitting it electronically. Review and sign-off of VAT returns and other Indirect Tax Returns for Absa Group Ltd & its subsidiaries (monthly) in relation to supporting documents and schedules. Submission to SARS if and when necessary.

  • Assisting with Absa Bank as well as other group entity annual apportionment calculations, preparation, review and submission.

  • Review of banking systems and transactions to assess potential VAT Savings as well as VAT Risks relating to these systems and transactions.

  • Review indirect tax assessments by checking same against the relevant return submitted and object and/or appeal if and when necessary. Correspond (general) with Revenue authorities if and when required.

  • Tax advice and support (BU's & subsidiaries): Give advice to Absa Bank business units & subsidiary companies on Indirect tax treatment of income and expenditure, proposed structures, new products and specific transactions.

  • Give advice to Absa Bank business units & subsidiary companies on completion of Indirect Tax packs and/or returns.

  • Manage tax risk by liaising with business units and/or subsidiaries and attending meetings with management and external auditors.

  • Obtain opinions and advice from external specialists to minimize the risk and identify the tax risk areas relevant to the business.

  • Give ad hoc advice and opinions to Absa Bank Business Units & subsidiary companies on new indirect tax amendments and the effect thereof on the business.

  • Disseminate and implement new Indirect Tax compliance requirements.

  • Networking: Establish and maintain a good relationship with Absa Group Finance in providing accurate numbers for reporting purposes on a regular basis. Establish and maintain a good relationship with all the Absa Group subsidiaries by providing tax support (i.e. providing tax knowledge, tax advice, etc). Establish and maintain a good relationship with Absa Bank business units by providing tax support (i.e. providing tax knowledge, advice, etc). 3. Establish and maintain a good relationship with the external auditors by providing workings, supporting evidence, documentation, and explanations.

  • Establish and maintain a good relationship with the South African Revenue Services by complying to South African Tax Law at all times.

  • Provide tax training to Absa delegates if and when necessary.

  • Represent Absa on BASA Indirect Tax Committee and other Industry based Forums to promote Absa specific items.

Minimum Requirements:

  • B.Com (Hons) plus relevant Tax Qualification i.e. M.Com Tax, Advanced VAT Diploma or Higher Diploma Tax

  • 8 -10 years relevant experience minimum in corporate or audit firm

  • Preferably Financial Services related experience

Postgraduate Degrees and Professional Qualifications: Financial Sciences (Required)
