About the Role

  • Lead and supervise laboratory operations of the Molecular Pathology department, ensuring effective and efficient delivery of Cancer Genetics services for St Vincent’s Hospital campus, SydPath collection centres and other major clients.

  • Manage laboratory resources and performance through effective rostering, staff supervision, training, and performance reviews, while maintaining equipment, consumables, and accurate operational documentation.

  • Ensure analytical excellence by validating and verifying new test methods, authoring and reviewing standard operating procedures (SOPs), and critically assessing test results to provide accurate technical and scientific interpretations.

  • Strengthen clinical and client relationships by providing expert consultation, reviewing quality assurance and proficiency testing outcomes, and communicating effectively with clinicians and stakeholders.

  • Drive continuous improvement and organisational effectiveness by identifying and managing risks, incidents, and complaints, leading audits and staff meetings, and promoting innovation, education, and a culture of quality and safety.

About You

  • Hold appropriate tertiary qualifications, MSc or PhD in a scientific discipline relevant to pathology, demonstrating advanced technical and theoretical expertise in molecular diagnostics.

  • You possess extensive hands-on experience in molecular biology techniques, including PCR, next-generation sequencing, and bioinformatics analysis, ensuring accuracy and innovation in testing and data interpretation.

  • You bring strong leadership and supervisory experience within a pathology laboratory, with a proven ability to manage teams, oversee workflows, and uphold quality and safety standards.

  • You demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of laboratory regulations, and accreditation standards, ensuring full compliance and operational excellence.

  • You are a proactive communicator and collaborative team member, committed to flexibility in rostering and to fostering a supportive, high-performing, and service-oriented laboratory environment.
