Security Director

Horace Mann seeks an experienced and proactive Security Director to lead and manage all aspects of our physical security strategy, ensuring the safety and security of our executives, employees, visitors, facilities, and physical assets. This role is not focused on IT or cybersecurity but rather on environmental safety, executive protection, crisis preparedness, threat management and day-to-day office/facility security operations.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in corporate or law enforcement security leadership, emergency response planning, and organizational safety practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage all aspects of our physical security strategy, ensuring the safety and security of our executives, employees, visitors, facilities, and physical assets.
  • Focus on environmental safety, executive protection, crisis preparedness, threat management and day-to-day office and facility security operations.
  • Provide armed close protection for executives during travel, events, and day-to-day operations.
  • Plan, prepare and execute detailed protection plans for executives, considering threat levels and potential risk factors.
  • Conduct advance site visits to plan evacuation routes and assess potential security risks when necessary.
  • Train executives and family members in personal safety, emergency protocols, and situational awareness.
  • Maintain readiness and proficiency with assigned firearms and ensure compliance with all relevant firearms laws and permits.
  • Lead and manage onsite security personnel across various office locations, ensuring coverage, professionalism, and adherence to company protocols.
  • Conduct regular risk assessments, facility inspections, and threat/vulnerability analyses across company properties.
  • Develop and enforce internal policies related to physical access, workplace safety, and incident reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable OSHA, local, and federal safety regulations.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for security-related incidents, lead investigations and coordinate with law enforcement when necessary.
  • Collaborate with HR and Legal teams on employee safety concerns, investigations, or security risks.
  • Prepare detailed threat assessments, incident reports, and security status updates for leadership.
  • Oversee access control, surveillance systems, visitor management, and emergency preparedness plans at all facilities.
  • Manage security vendor relationships and contracts.
  • Lead emergency preparedness efforts, including active shooter training, evacuation drills, and continuity planning.
  • Maintain and update crisis response and business continuity plans.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Security Management, Emergency Management, or related field (or equivalent experience) required.
  • 8–10 years of progressive leadership experience in physical security, workplace safety, law enforcement or military service.
  • Valid driver’s license: Advanced driving certification (e.g., EVOC or defensive driving) preferred.
  • Firearms certified with active carry permit(s) and a strong record of safe, responsible weapon handling.
  • Certified in Executive Protection and/or Security Management (e.g., EP, CPP, PSP).
  • Proven experience developing and managing corporate security programs.
  • Strong knowledge of access control, surveillance systems, emergency response protocols, and safety compliance.
  • Willingness to work irregular hours, travel as required and be on-call for emergency response.
  • Must pass a comprehensive background check, psychological screening, and drug test.
  • Possess a strong background in corporate or law enforcement security leadership, emergency response planning, and organizational safety practices.
  • Excellent leadership, interpersonal, and crisis management skills.
  • High integrity, discretion, and professionalism under all circumstances.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and situational awareness.
  • Comfortable with high-level stakeholders and working in confidential environments.

Pay Range:

  • $99,100.00 - $146,050.00 annually

Salary is commensurate to experience, location, etc.
