This role primarily focuses on maintaining and enhancing Energy Trading Systems for spot trading of electricity and gas in the AEMO and WEMS markets, while also supporting related trading operations such as gas and contract market trading. A key responsibility is to ensure the trading team avoids financial losses due to system failures and is equipped with timely, accurate information to optimize market performance. The role also involves working with IT teams to manage systems and foster a collaborative team environment, while mentoring junior team members.
In addition to technical oversight, the role ensures that product development aligns with sound business and technology practices, supporting business transformation through the implementation of new capabilities. This includes designing, testing, deploying, and maintaining software solutions in close coordination with trading, risk, and forecasting teams. The Technical Lead is expected to apply DevOps practices and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement, self-organization, and inclusivity, while adhering to enterprise standards, tools, and processes in collaboration with both local and global teams.
What you’ll be doing
Major responsibilities, accountabilities, key communications, and challenges of the role:
Support and Collaboration: Assist the Product and Portfolio Manager in achieving team and organizational goals, while working closely with trading teams to understand and deliver on business requirements for AEMO and WEMS markets.
System Development and Delivery: Lead the design, development, testing, and deployment of trading systems and processes, ensuring alignment with Shell IT standards, information security compliance, and DevOps practices.
Operational Support: Provide ongoing support for energy trading systems, including out-of-hours assistance when necessary, and ensure seamless integration with broader development teams for large-scale projects.
Mentorship and Leadership: Guide and mentor junior IT Trading Systems squad members, fostering a collaborative and high-performing team environment.
Lifecycle Management: Participate in all phases of the software development lifecycle—requirements gathering, analysis, design, coding, testing, implementation, and production support—while ensuring proper documentation.
Stakeholder Engagement: Build strong relationships with the Power Trading Business, local IT teams, global counterparts, and external stakeholders such as AEMO and Synergy to align on goals and share best practices.
Continuous Improvement: Actively contribute to process enhancements, recommend improvements, and prototype new technologies and solutions to meet evolving business needs.
Cross-Functional Integration: Serve as the integration point between trading operations and IT, ensuring that energy trading processes are well-supported and aligned with business transformation initiatives.
Compliance and Governance: Maintain awareness of and ensure adherence to the Shell Compliance Framework and global IT governance standards.
Adaptability and Global Alignment: Navigate a dynamic work environment, balancing local delivery needs with global strategies and guidelines, while maintaining flexibility to adapt to shifting priorities.
