ABOUT THIS JOB

Position Specific Summary

The Roofer position at the City of Tucson’s General Services Department is responsible for installing, repairing, and maintaining roofs and related drainage components to ensure structural integrity and compliance with safety and material specifications.


Work is performed under the supervision of the Carpentry Supervisor. This position does not supervise.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs preventive maintenance by inspecting roofs, identifying potential failures, and completing necessary repairs.

  • Installs and repairs roofs by estimating materials, applying coating, shingles, or sheet metal, and replacing components such as gutters, downspouts, duct work, and flashing.

  • Estimates labor and material requirements needed for assigned roofing jobs and ensures compliance with specifications and safety standards.

  • Uses scaffolding, ladders, fall protection, and other equipment to safely access roofs and conducts inspections to confirm work quality and compliance with material, and application specifications.

  • Performs all other duties and tasks as assigned.

Working Conditions

Work schedule may require early morning, late evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and on-call shifts.


Must be available for emergency on-call during monsoon and forecasted heavy weather conditions impacting roof stability.


Indoor and outdoor work with heavy exposure to extreme physical, ergonomic, or emotional hazardous environment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High school diploma or equivalent
Experience: Two (2) years of directly related experience
Equivalency: Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
License/Certifications: Valid and unrestricted Arizona Class D Driver License.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in commercial roof repair and replacement on multiple roof systems in a commercial application.
