Risk Analyst, Investment Risk

The Risk Analyst, Investment Risk, will join a talented and high-performing ALM, Credit and Market Risk team that oversees credit and market risk assessment practices across The Hartford along with a wider set of risk governance practices of the Hartford Investment Management Company (HIMCO) subsidiary.  The analyst will primarily focus on enhancing risk assessment practices across the expanding book of private asset classes including private equity and infrastructure limited partnerships, private placements, and private asset based lending transactions to ensure all relevant risk characteristics are appropriately captured, monitored and evaluated as financial conditions evolve. The analyst, together with the broader risk management team will ensure that The Hartford’s exposure to credit and market risks remain within established risk tolerances by assessing and monitoring these risks over time and under different economic conditions.

This role will have a Hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of working in the Hartford, CT office 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with developing and implementing repeatable risk assessment practices for various private asset classes monitoring key features including fund structure, portfolio diversification, leverage, cash flows, ratings, etc. noting relevant comparisons to publicly traded assets.

  • Assist in development of enhanced stress testing practices reflecting unique risk characteristics of the private asset portfolio while quantifying potential downside impacts.

  • Assist with automation of the measurement, aggregation, and communication of risks within the investment portfolio in a timely manner while leveraging artificial intelligence to aggregate and monitor risk metrics from investment memos and quarterly reports.

  • Ongoing responsibilities will also include independent evaluation of the performance of limited partnership investments to highlight any potential deteriorating trends on a quarterly basis.

  • Collaborate with senior team members to develop automated processes for monitoring trends in business development companies across various dimensions.

  • Conduct market research and highlight relevant trends and insights within the functional area. Promptly respond to evolving market conditions with assessment of potential portfolio impacts and communication of findings to risk managers, portfolio managers, or investment teams as appropriate.

  • Effectively collaborate and communicate with teammates across risk management, the investment management organization and other business partners.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a quantitative discipline (e.g., Quantitative Finance, Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Economics, Statistics). Relevant investment risk credentials a plus (e.g., CFA, FRM, or CAIA).

  • Curiosity and inquisitiveness, strong problem-solving skills, resourcefulness and a positive collaborative attitude.

  • Demonstrated interest and passion for risk management and alternative asset investments.

  • Organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple projects and adapt to shifting priorities.

  • Excellent communication skills with ability to summarize complex investment concepts in succinct and tangible terms.

  • Experience with Python, R, Excel/VBA, or related programming languages.

As a condition of your employment on the ALM, Credit and Market Risk team, you will be required to affirm to HIMCO’s Code of Ethics and understand that you will be required to comply with the disclosure of accounts, holdings and pre-clearance of trades for the accounts of you and your household family members as more fully described in the Code of Ethics Key Points. If you will be deemed to be a “Covered Associate” under HIMCO’s Pay to Play Policy, you will also need to disclose all political contributions that you have given within the past 2 calendar years.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$80,000 - $120,000
