Assumes clinical supervision for maintaining the perioperative standards of patient care for a defined patient population. Represents OR management and acts as liaison between nursing, OR staff, surgeons and other hospital departments.The following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job. The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below. In addition, specific functions may change from time to time:
Evaluates adequacy and appropriateness of patient care equipment, supplies, environment and makes provision for adjustments as required for these needs on all shifts
Suggests and supports needs for capital equipment and operational expenses
Identifies education or training needs of team members and communicates with clinical educator of these needs
Communicates with surgeons, particularly in the defined specialty areas of responsibility, regarding technological changes and related information
Discusses need for disciplinary action with the Patient Care Manager for complex situations and takes actions in disciplining staff when or if an emergency occurs
Supports patients in the practice of cultural and spiritual beliefs within limits of the medical regimen
Adjust patient care based on the age specific physiological and psychosocial needs of patients typically served
Completes accurate charges for patient services and participates in cost containment
Maintains surgeon preference cards for accuracy of supplies and equipment
When scheduled on weekends coordinator performs charge nurse role
Other duties as assigned
The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this job:
Associate’s degree in Nursing required
Bachelor’s degree in Nursing preferred
Current Registered Nurse licensure in North Carolina
Certified or seeking AORN certification preferred
1 year progressive experience in operating room required
Experience in circulating duties required
Knowledge base of case set-up and ability to assist surgical technologist with set-up and equipment
Ability to organize systems and people
Ability to read, write, and speak English
Knowledgeable of age specific physiological/psychosocial/developmental/spiritual needs of patients typically served
Working knowledge of OR routines, a wide variety of equipment, medication, and procedures specific to surgical areas of responsibility
Long periods of standing, walking and sitting
Occasional assistance with heavy lifting
Verbal abilities for communication of patient needs
Visual/auditory acuity
Position may involve skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious material
