The expected hiring range for this position is:

$156,600.00-$222,467.00.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such the scope and responsibilities of the position, qualifications of the selected candidate, business considerations, internal equity, and external market pay for comparable jobs.

About the Role:
The Magnet Technology Division within Fermilab is seeking a Project Manager.  Under limited direction and having substantial latitude for unreviewed action or decision, responsible for all aspects of the projects and provides a single point of contact for those projects.  Take projects from original concepts through completion.  Manages other Project managers or technical experts working as project managers for a subset project.

Project Scope: Lab-wide responsibility with extremely complex problems where analysis of situations and data requires a comprehensive and in-depth evaluation of intangible variables. Exercises independent judgment in developing methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Guides and provides ultimate direction for projects.

What your day-to-day as a Project Manager at Fermilab will look like:

  • Controls project(s) through established reporting and review processes; maintains final authority for resolution of variances, issues and conflicts ensuring the integrity of project goals within the assignment.
  •  Identifies project documentation requirements or procedures.
  •  Enhances the national and international presence of projects through participation in and collaboration on project reviews.
  •  Develops and implements Fermilab’s Project Management policies and acts as subject matter expert providing guidance and interpretation of PM policies relative to specific project assignment(s).
  •  Determines appropriate products or services with clients or customers to define project scope, requirements, and deliverables.
  • Develops, modifies, or provides input to project plans; these plans comprise the following as required by the DOE Order 413; or as appropriate:
  • Project Execution Plan 
  • Acquisition Strategy
  • Project Management Plan
  • Conceptual Design Report
  • Project Data Sheets
  • Hazard Analyses and Safety Analysis Report
  • Technical Design Report / Engineering Design Report
  • Earned Value Management System Description
  • Value Engineering Plan / Document 
  • Risk Management Plan
  • Quality Assurance Plan
  • Construction Project Safety and Health Plan
  • Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Exhibit 300
  •  Leads development of cost estimates, monitors and manages obligations to the budget profile, and monitors/manages actual costs according to the Office of Management and Budget Exhibit 300.
  •  Develops, updates and analyzes schedules to ensure timely completion of project; develops agendas and chairs group meetings and/or reviews.
  •  Guides and provides ultimate direction for project(s).
  •  Develops, updates and analyzes schedules to ensure timely completion of project(s).
  •  Manages, leads, and administers project resources.
  •  Conducts negotiations to obtain and maintain resources with laboratory and collaboration managements.
  •  Negotiates, establishes, and tracks Memorandums of Understandings (MOUs) and/or Statements of Work (SOWs) with the various institutions performing work for the project.
  •  Implements and executes the change control process.
  •  Monitors project activities and resources to mitigate risk.
  •  Oversees internal and independent external project-level reviews to assess performance and identify areas for potential improvement.
  •  Implements or maintains quality assurance processes; makes improvements, solves problems, or takes corrective action when problems arise.
  •  Leads project meetings and responsible for all communication with Project Managers, Division/Section Managers, the Director’s Office, and funding entities regarding status of project(s).
  •  Ensures adherence to quality standards and reviews project deliverables.
  •  Ensures the management of the integration of vendor tasks; tracks and reviews vendor deliverables.
  •  Responsible for overall analysis of the project team(s).
  •  Recommends and takes action to direct the analysis and solutions of problems.
  •  Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
  •  Abides by and is responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, health and safety regulations and practices pertinent to this position.

Skills and Attributes for Success:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Project Management, Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Business Administration or a related field or equivalent experience plus minimum 15+ years. experience; or equivalent.

  • Onsite: This is an onsite role, and the candidate must be able to work from our Batavia office.
