Principal Engineer

The Principal Engineer leads initiatives and processes in circularity from start to finish.  Focuses on long-term team capability and business growth. Serves as a technical expert in different resources and aspects of the business. Collaborates with other internal functions and external partners to enable new products, enhance systems, increase line efficiency, drive circularity, improve quality, and/or enable other projects which add value to Niagara’s business.

Essential Functions

  • Provides input and direction regarding different aspects of the business for new and existing customers. 
  • Provides documentation to build knowledge on technical design learnings and solutions.
  • Identifies research opportunities based on emerging trends in the industry.
  • Provides coaching and development to new technical engineers and scientists.
  • Serves as a technical expert in the areas of injection molding, packaging design optimization, tamper evidence solutions, and sustainable solutions.
  • Adapt at problem solving, making decisions, and handling difficult situations.
  • Develop project proposals with internal and external collaborations.
  • Identifies, initiates, develops, and maintains relationships with suppliers and other external collaborators.
  • On-site leadership of new technology and experimental trials.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Qualifications:
    • 10+ Years  – Experience in in Packaging Engineering, Packaging Design, and Packaging technical problem solving
    • 6 Years  – Experience in Position, Packaging Engineering, and Sustainability
    • 10+ Years  – Experience working with scientists, engineers, graduate researchers, interns, lab assistants.

              *experience may include a combination of work experience and education

  • Preferred Qualifications:
    • 10+ Years– Experience in Packaging Engineering, Packaging Design, and Packaging technical problem solving
    • 10+ Years – Experience working in Position, Packaging Engineering, and Sustainability 
    • 10+ Years – Experience working with scientists, engineers, graduate researchers, interns, lab assistants.
    • *experience may include a combination of work experience and education

Competencies

  • Injection molding or blow molding experience. Experience in both is preferred.
  • Consulting experience: has coached scientists, engineers, interns, and laboratory technicians.
  • Experience in analyzing and interpreting large sets of data.
  • Experience in innovation and development for primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging.
  • Project management: successfully completes projects in a timely fashion.
  • Oral Communication: speaks clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations; demonstrates presentation skills. 
  • Written Communication: writes clearly and informatively; presents numerical data effectively; able to read and interpret written information. 
  • Problem Solving: identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner; gathers and analyzes information skillfully.
  • Microsoft Office Products.

Physical Demands:

  • Travel up to 40%.  Some work in hot, cold, or confined production environments.
  • Must be able to operate tools used when changing molds and operating R&D equipment.

Education

  • Minimum Required: 
    • Masters of Science in Plastics engineering and other related fields or equivalent experience.
  • Preferred: 
    • Ph.D. of Science in Plastics Engineering or equivalent experience.  Materials Science and Engineering exposure.  Supply Chain and Business educational training.

Typical Compensation Range

Pay Rate Type: Salary

$130,361.20 - $189,023.75 / Yearly

Bonus Target: 15% Annual
