The Portfolio Manager will be responsible for managing multi-asset portfolios within a discretionary fund management and multi-manager framework. This includes portfolio implementation, trade preparation, manager research, and strategic and tactical asset allocation.
The role requires a deep understanding of investment markets, portfolio construction, and operational execution within a regulated South African financial services environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Portfolio Management & Implementation
- Execute portfolio strategies across multi-asset classes in line with investment mandates.
- Oversee portfolio implementation including rebalancing, cash flow management, and trade execution.
- Prepare and review trade instructions ensuring accuracy and compliance with internal controls.
- Monitor portfolio performance and risk metrics, ensuring alignment with strategic objectives.
- Trade Preparation & Execution
- Collaborate with operations and LISP platforms to ensure timely and accurate trade execution.
- Maintain trade blotters and ensure pre-trade compliance checks are completed.
- Liaise with custodians, brokers, and administrators to resolve trade-related queries.
Manager Research & Due Diligence
- Solid experience and understanding of qualitative and quantitative research on third-party asset managers.
- Contribute to manager selection and monitoring processes.
- Maintain a database of manager performance, style, and risk characteristics.
- Strategic & Tactical Asset Allocation
- Contribute to the development of strategic asset allocation frameworks.
- Participate in tactical asset allocation discussions and implement changes across portfolios.
- Monitor macroeconomic indicators, market trends, and valuation metrics to inform allocation decisions.
Client & Stakeholder Engagement
- Prepare and deliver client reportbacks, including portfolio performance, attribution analysis, and market commentary.
- Support client reporting and presentations with portfolio insights and performance commentary.
- Collaborate with financial advisors, consultants, and internal stakeholders to ensure portfolio alignment with client objectives.
- Respond to client queries and provide investment-related support as needed.

Qualifications and Experience required:
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, Economics, Investment Management or related field (CFA preferred).
- Minimum 5 years of experience in portfolio management, investment research, or multi-manager environments.
- Strong understanding of South African investment regulations (FAIS, CISCA, etc.).
- Experience with portfolio management systems and trade execution platforms.
- Proficiency in Excel, Bloomberg, Morningstar, or similar tools.
- Analytical mindset with strong quantitative and qualitative research skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage multiple portfolios simultaneously.
- Strong communication and presentation skills, especially in client-facing contexts.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and engage with external managers and service providers.
- High level of integrity and professionalism.
