Job Summary: VA Central Texas HCS is seeking a Physician Radiologist with expertise in breast imaging.The ideal applicant is committed to providing quality care in breast imaging while being a team player adaptable to the department's needs and contributes to the general radiology workflow. There is flexibility to adapt the percentage of time spent in mammography vs general radiology to the applicant's skill set. Major Duties:

  • This is an Open Continuous Announcement & will remain open until March 12, 2026, or until all positions are filled. The first cut-off date is November 21, 2025. After that time, you must update your application through your USAJobs account if you would like to be made active again for possible consideration during the open period. -- The selected applicant will serve as full-time staff radiologist for the Diagnostic Imaging Service, with the goal of spending at least 50% of their time in breast imaging. When not focused on their area of specialized expertise, the selectee is expected to contribute to the general radiology workload. Flexibility is appreciated to adapt to departmental needs, which can vary daily based on staffing. Position duties include, but are not limited to: Interpreting the full spectrum of breast imaging studies including screening and diagnostic 2D/3D mammography, breast ultrasound and breast MRI, and performing interventional breast biopsy procedures including ultrasound and stereotactic needle biopsies and wire localizations The Breast Imaging Section uses Hologic mammographic equipment including state of the art 3D tomosynthesis and stereotactic breast biopsy system, and ultrasound equipment. Pre-screening high-risk, high-cost and high-demand examinations (CT, US, MRI, Mammography, Breast-Interventional Procedures, etc. Interpreting general radiology studies depending on skill set (fluoroscopy, radiography, ultrasound, MRI, CT, etc.) Monitoring the quality of submitted diagnostic images. Required to communicate critical test findings directly to the ordering provider in a timely manner in accordance with established organizational policies and to appropriately document their interpretations, procedures, and health care decision in the organization's electronic medical record. Supervise and direct the activities of residents, technologists and nurses working in the service. Radiologists supervise the administration of medications, including contrast agents, by technologists and nurses. Participate in quality assurance and process improvement activities. Applying knowledge and understanding of safety, imaging procedures, and relevant accreditation standards including those of the Joint Commission, the ACR, and the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) and ability to facilitate re-accreditation/re-certification Participate in call after normal duty hours and on weekends and Federal holidays according to an "on call" rotation roster established by the Imaging Service Chief. Exam interpretations outside of normal duty hours are primarily handled by a separate teleradiology service. The on call staff radiologist's responsibilities consist primarily of answering infrequent questions from technologists and providers. The on call radiologist also serves as a back up to the teleradiology service and, in rare instances such as information technology disruption, the on call radiologist might be called on to interpret emergency exams. Consult with referring clinical services. Radiologists who are "on call" are required to ensure that they are able to be contacted in the event of an emergent/urgent situation dealing with imaging issues and are required to courteously respond to all "on call" pages or telephonic calls in a timely manner. Serve as consultant for interdisciplinary tumor board. Qualifications: To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. License: Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. English Language Proficiency: Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: Board certification in Diagnostic Radiology Fellowship training in breast imaging or women's imaging preferred but not required Well-rounded and experienced physician capable of interpreting a wide gamut of CT, MRI, Diagnostic Ultrasound, GI/GU fluoroscopy and general radiological x-ray examinations. Proficiency in women's imaging including mammography, breast MRI, and breast procedures.
