Job Summary: This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Major Duties:

  • This position is responsible for the leadership, management, and operations of the VISN level CRH Occupational and Environmental Health (OH) Programs. The CRH OH Section Chief will work directly with VISN CRH leadership (e.g., Primary Care, Pharmacy, Mental Health, Nursing, etc.) and VISN leadership (e.g. VISN Occupational Health, Primary Care, Telehealth, Pharmacy, Nursing lead, etc.) to ensure that the CRH OH services are high performing. Section Chief/Administrative Functions Provides leadership, management, and oversight of providers and/or programs that support VISN CRH Occupational Health delivery of care. Collaborates in the development and maintenance of written policies and procedures defining operational requirements for the CRH Occupational Health program. Functions as the CRH Occupational Health subject matter expert and enforces Occupational Health and CRH policies and procedures. Participates in recruitment and selection of all new CRH Occupational Health staff with a significant and active role in the selection of applicants. Uses advanced clinical knowledge and virtual expertise to promote staff involvement in planning, decision-making, and evaluating outcomes. Develops and monitors performance/outcome metrics and conducts analysis of existing CRH Occupational Health programs and services. Makes recommendations to the CRH Director for program's strategic direction, productivity, improved process performance, and capital utilization. Ensures the CRH Occupational Health program is compliant with all regulatory and accrediting body requirements (e.g., TJC, DEA, FDA, etc.). Analyzes and allocates available resources and identifies risk areas which include budgetary, staffing, equipment, and available data. Travels to provide training and implementation of CRH Occupational Health services. Clinical Responsibilities This position requires the incumbent to provide direct outpatient and consultative care as a member of a virtual interprofessional Occupational and Environmental Health care team. Provider will oversee and coordinate medical care for Veterans in a group practice setting. Most care will be provided virtually to Spoke sites, using telehealth equipment, however, face-to-face care may be provided as indicated and necessary. Safeguarding the health and safety of employees and others. Detecting unsafe working conditions or those which may pose health hazards. Determining whether the employee is medically able to return to work or resume regular duties without impairing his/her own health or the health of others after a period of injury or illness. Providing consultation and advisement to facility-based Occupational Health services, as indicated. Toxic exposure screening and assessment, as per National VHA guidance. Incumbent must be able to work CST and EST.

Qualifications: To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. License: Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Board Certification: Board certification is required. Language: Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: At least five years of direct Occupational Health and/or Environmental Medicine practice experience. Experience in leadership and administration also preferred.
