As a Phlebotomy Lab Technician, you will collect blood samples from patients in an outpatient setting as well as package them for transport and deliver them to the appropriate location. Many patients often find needles and the idea of having their blood drawn frightening. Using your experience and skills, you can help put the patient at ease while obtaining all the required specimens. 

A caregiver in this role works an evening/night rotation from 3:00 p.m. – 11:30 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. – 7:30 a.m. with rotating weekend and holiday requirements.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Perform blood collection procedures and related tasks. 

  • Verify order requests and identifying information prior to drawing blood or collecting the specimen/kit to be tested by analytical staff. 

  • Label all specimens collected and deliver them to the appropriate processing area. 

  • Follow venipuncture procedures and maintain appropriate log sheets. 

  • Greet patients warmly and professionally at check in, when they present to outpatient lab desks or when entering a patient's room. 

  • Complete test request entry and specimen receipt using lab computer. 

  • Perform specimen processing and send out tasks, including accessioning, centrifugation and packaging for transport, for all specimen types. 

  • Communicate essential information to appropriate personnel. 

  • Pick up and deliver blood, other sample types and lab supplies to appropriate areas. 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • High School Diploma or GED 

  • Graduate of Phlebotomy Program OR one year of specimen collection experience 

  • Computer experience 

  • Trouble shooting and problem-solving skills

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • Formal Phlebotomy certification 

  • One year of experience with specimen collection and laboratory techniques and procedures 

  • Previous phlebotomy experience or recently completed phlebotomy school

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires frequent and long durations of standing and walking.

  • Visual acuity including the ability to distinguish colors.

  • Manual dexterity sufficient to manipulate blood drawing equipment and make measurements.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
