Job Summary

The Patient Support Technician functions as a collaborative member of the health care team under the supervision of the Registered Nurse. Utilizing principles of Relationship-Based Care, the technician performs direct patient care and coordinates unit activities. This role supports the unit-based shared governance council and promotes excellence in patient care experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • - Demonstrate principles of Relationship-Based Care to maintain therapeutic relationships.
  • - Provide patient care that respects patients' rights, dignity, values, and cultural preferences.
  • - Perform basic bedside care and selected procedures under RN supervision (e.g., venipuncture, EKG, glucose monitoring, respiratory care, dressing changes, vital signs collection).
  • - Assist with activities of daily living (ADLs) appropriate to patient condition.
  • - Initiate and maintain patient medical records.
  • - Manage unit communication including calls and patient census.
  • - Assist with patient education under RN direction.
  • - Provide nutritional support such as feeding assistance and intake documentation.
  • - Support admission process and individualized care plans.
  • - Engage in unit-based committees and initiatives for safety and patient satisfaction.
  • - Report changes in patient condition to RN promptly.
  • - Demonstrate proper body mechanics and perform other duties as assigned.
  • - Maintain confidentiality and adhere to Trinity Health values and standards.
  • - Participate in ongoing education and revenue management practices.
  • - Track and maintain unit equipment and use electronic health records for documentation.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience: Preferably at least one of the following:

  • - 6 months direct patient care experience within past 5 years.
  • - Completion of one Medical/Surgical clinical rotation in a nursing educational program.
  • - Completion of a Patient Care Technician program with externship in acute care.
  • - Previous Health Unit Coordinator/Unit Secretary experience.

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or GED program.

Preferred: Completion of one of the following:

  • - Certification program with Medical/Surgical rotation.
  • - Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).
  • - Equivalent work experience.

Licensure/Certification:

- If EMT, current licensure in State of Michigan.

- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through American Heart Association.

Physical and Working Conditions

  • - Maintain skill level through required education offerings.
  • - Typical day includes 25% sitting, 25% standing, and 50% walking.
  • - Exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous substances.
  • - Weekend and holiday work required; may be assigned to other units/shifts.
  • - Occasional squatting, crawling, crouching, kneeling, and balancing.
  • - Frequent bending/stooping, reaching, pushing/pulling.
  • - Use of hands required for tasks.
