Job Summary :

To provide nursing care that is patient and family education centered in an environment that exemplifies best practice and customer service; fosters relationship based care; and maintains the integrity of professional nursing standards. Nursing care guidelines are based on the ANA Code of Ethics (1), Indiana Nurse Practice Act (2), Nursing Process, and regulatory agency standards by which the RN provides patient care and shared leadership for the unit.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities: 

Fiscal Responsibility

  • Confers with Unit Director on unit education budgetary needs and submits annual Patient Education budget.
  • Manages time productively; flexes scheduling for patient need; maintains automated time system documentation; and completes assignments/teaching responsibilities per scheduled time frames.
  • Seeks assistance from resources to optimize patient scheduling for education per standards and provide appropriate billing information and documentation.
  • Reviews and maintains current resource literature, attends product and practice change education, and applies such to promote non-salary cost saving (equipment and supplies.)

    Quality

    • Develops, individualizes, evaluates and revises teaching plans based on the nursing process, evidence based practice, teaching checklists and Standards of Care/Standards of Practice to achieve optimal outcomes.
    • Demonstrates critical thinking, ability to multitask, and provide complete documentation per unit and Hospital standards including critical situations and events.
    • Practices accountably in accordance with the nursing process to provide optimum care, collaborate with the team, streamline processes, and elevate the patient experience.
    • Participates in continuous quality improvement activities including, but not limited to, meaningful use, value based purchasing, application of regulatory measures, work redesign, research, audit, data gathering and nurse sensitive indicators, and education of colleagues through formal and informal teaching activities to elevate practice.

    Patient Satisfaction

    • Performs comprehensive assessments and reassessments inclusive of clients/significant others’ readiness to learn, learning capabilities, and components for teaching, health promotion, restoration and maintenance.
    • Prioritizes and revises patient education according to patient/significant others’ input, initial assessment/diagnosis/clinical response and diagnostic findings and provides direct patient education.
    • Alters teaching techniques based on patient age/stage and responses to other healthcare provider’s interventions/treatments, and discusses/reinforces/supports client expression of need and coping behaviors with timely response and professionalism.
    • Represents the Hospital positively in provision of service to the community independently and at Hospital sponsored or community events.

    Patient Safety

    • Utilizes teaching checklists/Zone sheets to instruct clients and/or significant others in safe practices and application of standard precautions.
    • Applies safety care practices (fall prevention, safe patient mobilization, medication administration and patient identification) in daily routines and patient education; complies with regulatory standards, HRH fire, safety, and disaster plans, hazardous waste guidelines and OSHA.
    • Incorporates and promotes safe practice of medication and dietary interventions, physical and occupational therapies, survival techniques and integrates other healthcare providers in teaching plans and follow-up.
    • Utilizes the hospital event notification system for patient events and follow-up; reports near misses, participates in proactive processes to reduce error, and applies the principles of Just Culture, HIPPA, national safety standards and social media policy.

    • Takes a self-directed approach to obtain learning activities/skills to increase professional competence and practice related to primary area of clinical work and population age.
    • Maintains licensure and actively seeks opportunity for growth in such areas as certification, Hospital clinical advancement programs, advanced degree, and nursing shared leadership and council opportunities.
    • Attends educational offerings, maintains awareness of current practice standards, tracks professional accomplishments and collaborates with Director on professional needs and learning options.
    • Shares knowledge and skills with colleagues and others as a content/skills expert, and participates in development and implementation of area goals and objectives.

    • Exhibits excellent guest relations and conforms to Service Excellence requirements. This position requires communication and interaction with the public, co-workers, administrators, contacts from other hospitals, schools and/or other departments.
    • Provides Relationship Based Care, incorporates holistic care for diverse populations, promotes interdepartmental collegial relationships, communicates with the physician regarding specific data, and documents patient/significant other education per established standards.
    • Functions as a public education resource, provides information, schedules and notifies clients of outpatient programs, confers with Marketing to initiate/assist with/market community education and acts as a patient education liaison with physicians.

    Education and Experience Required: 

    • Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing with a minimum of a Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing Degree, (BSN), required.
    • Minimum of 2 years hospital experience.
    • Computer skills required.
    • Area specific required education may be obtained upon hire and is to be maintained.

    Mandatory Licensure/Certifications: 

    • Current licensure by the Indiana State Board of Nurses’ Registration and Nursing Education as an active Registered Nurse.
    • Certified Diabetic Educator preferred.
