Specially trained gastroenterologists and general surgeons perform endoscopic procedures at Cleveland Clinic Akron General. Endoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure used to help physicians more thoroughly explore internal areas of the body, such as the colon, esophagus and small bowel. As a Patient Care Nursing Assistant (PCNA) on this team, you will perform various tasks, ensuring patients receive frequent attention and feel comfortable, supported and safe throughout treatment. This is a hands-on role that requires a present, attentive and empathetic caregiver who is willing to learn new medical technologies and support patients through some of their most vulnerable moments. In this role, you will gain a wide variety of skills you can use in advanced positions or other departments within the Cleveland Clinic system.  

 

A caregiver in this position works Monday-Friday from 7:30AM – 4:00PM. Start times may vary between 7:00AM-8:00AM depending on the need of the business. 

 

A caregiver who excels in this role will:   

  • Prepare units, patient rooms and patient beds for receiving patient admission, returning surgical patients, transfer or emergencies.  

  • Provide and document assigned care, such as bathing, changing/refreshing bed linens, dressing/undressing, feeding, etc. 

  • Take and document the patient's temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, weight and height.  

  • Perform treatment procedures, such as venous blood draws, enemas, application of ice and heat packs, non-sterile compresses, skin preps, setting up oxygen equipment, bed scale weights, setting up overhead trapeze and Buck’s traction, removing urinary foley catheters and other therapeutic measures.   

  • Assist with pre-operative and post-operative care, such as turning and positioning patients with proper body mechanics, applying/utilizing special equipment and ambulating the patient as directed in a safe, prescribed manner.  

  • Assist and accompany patients during admission, transfer and discharge.  

  • Perform hourly safety rounds, anticipate patient needs and respond to patient call lights promptly.  

  • Document patient care in the electronic medical record.   

  • Complete ongoing competency requirements, education programs and mandatory training to maintain certification and/or licensure.   

  • Prepare patients for meals, assist in feeding patients if necessary and distribute water and other nourishments according to patient needs in compliance with physician orders.  

  • Collect, properly label and transport specimens to proper area in timely manner.  

 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:   

  • High School Diploma or GED  

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross upon or within new hire period  

  • Basic computer knowledge and skills  

 

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:   

  • State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA)   

  • One year of recent acute care experience 

  • Military experience as a Hospital Corpsman (HM), Combat Medic (68W) or Medical Service Technician (4N0X1) will be considered

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires full body motion to move and lift patients, manual finger dexterity with good eye-hand coordination; involves extensive standing and walking.

  • Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

  • Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
