What you’ll do:
- Department Oversight & Coordination: Oversee a team of paralegals within the Veterans Benefits department, ensuring consistent workflow, accountability, and support for supervising attorneys and case leads.
- Veterans Benefits Expertise: Provide guidance and oversight grounded in an in-depth understanding of VA law, processes, and claims handling. Support case teams to ensure quality, compliance, and timeliness across all filings and communications.
- Team Leadership & Development: Manage daily performance, coordinate schedules and time-off requests, and ensure full departmental coverage. Train and mentor paralegals to uphold accuracy, professionalism, and compassionate service.
- Client Experience & Escalations: Serve as the point of contact for escalated or high-sensitivity client matters, modeling calm, empathetic communication under pressure.
- Administrative Oversight: Coordinate administrative functions within the department, including scheduling, file audits, and ensuring attorneys are supported efficiently.
- Process Optimization: Identify bottlenecks and develop streamlined systems for file management, client updates, and case tracking. Ensure processes align with firm goals for efficiency and client satisfaction.
- Collaboration with Leadership: Work closely with the supervising attorney, Monica Irelan Karas, and leadership team members like Kristin Dows to refine workflows, implement departmental strategy, and uphold performance standards.
What we’re looking for:
- Experience & Background: 2+ years of experience in Veterans Benefits law or a directly related legal support role required. Prior experience at the VA or within a law firm handling VA claims strongly preferred.
- Leadership & Culture Fit: Energetic, no-ego leader who thrives in a fast-paced, growing environment. Balanced and assertive, able to motivate others while maintaining accountability and follow-through.
- Client Focus & Communication: Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with a service-oriented mindset. Skilled in de-escalating sensitive situations and supporting clients through complex claim processes.
