Position Overview:

The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner will provide care and monitoring of patients with the functional guidance Psychiatric Consult and Liaison Physician. This care includes working closely in formulating the treatment plan and follow up of medication management for patients.

JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES

PERFORMS MENTAL HEALTH CLINICAL CARE • Conducts histories and physicals, and psychiatric evaluation. • Ordering and monitoring laboratory results. • Assessing patients in consultation with the Psychiatric Consult and Liaison physician. • Ongoing medication management in consultation with the Psychiatric Consult and Liaison physician. • Managing care of the patients according to approved standardized procedures. • Maintaining documentation in patient charts/medical records. • Acts as a resource to patients and hospital staff. • Assess when psychiatric emergencies reach the point where it is appropriate to refer the patient to a psychiatric hospital.
PROVIDES PATIENT CARE COORDINATION • Ensures accurate and comprehensive communication to core team regarding patient findings, progress and concerns and promotes cohesive team approach to problem resolution. • Discusses patient care with family, health professionals and outside agencies, assesses understanding and re-educates or modifies intervention as necessary to facilitate follow through of recommendations. • Ensures the continuity of care throughout the continuum of health care through established communication practices.
SERVES AS EDUCATOR, RESOURCE PERSON AND ROLE MODEL TO OTHER TEAM MEMBERS AND THE COMMUNITY. • Provides instruction/in-services, for team members, other employees and students upon special request. • Maintains and enhances knowledge of current mental health issues and integrates ideas into practice. • Contributes to planning for in-service education by suggesting topics and speakers. Develops lesson plans for personal presentations. • Provides health education in Media events such as health fairs and community forums. • Acts as professional resource to health care professionals, support groups, local and community agencies through telephone consultation and speaking engagements.
ASSISTS WITH PROGRAM COORDINATION • Adheres to departmental and hospital policies, protocols and procedures. Complies with JCAHO, Title 22, OSHA Regulations and CCS Standards. • Accurately Completes charge forms for billing of team services and identifies patient diagnosis for ICD-9 coding within established time frames.
ASSISTS IN PROGRAM PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT • Provides input into development and revision of policies and procedures as appropriate. • Provides input for establishing annual objectives for the program and participates in staff meetings and task forces. • Upon request evaluates educational materials to ensure adequacy. Provides input into the development of new materials when necessary.

EDUCATION
Equivalent experience will be accepted in lieu of the required degree or diploma.

HS Diploma or equivalent education/experience
Bachelor's: Of Science in Nursing required
Master's: of Science or Master’s Degree in Nursing required within one year of hire.
Other: Post Masters Nurse Practitioner Certificate-Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner required within three years of hire.

CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE

RN-Registered Nurse of California
NP-Nurse Practitioner
BLS-Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider
CSRC-Controlled Substance Registered Certification (DEA)

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE AS TYPICALLY ACQUIRED IN:

Minimum of two years prior experience in hospital acute care nursing of which at least one year is in the area of mental health providing direct patient care to adults, child and adolescent experience preferred.
Prior experience in a psychiatric outpatient setting is required.
Experience working in a psychiatric multidisciplinary team preferred.
Previous experience working as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner preferred.
Program coordination or team leading experience is desirable.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

Demonstrated knowledge of DSM IV-TR is required.
Demonstrated knowledge in the de-escalation of agitated, poorly self-controlled individuals.
Demonstrated knowledge in the prescribing of psychotropic medication required
Knowledge in the area of mental health counseling, to include assessment, interpretation, management and evaluation of patient care.
Program development, implementation and evaluation knowledge is preferred.
Must possess excellent organizational skills and have the ability to be self-directed and act independently demonstrating sound judgment.
Knowledge and experience in interviewing and performing complete histories and physical and mental health exams.
Demonstrates excellent oral and written communication skills.
Must be able to work with adaptability, flexibility and maintain composure during pressure situations and adverse conditions.
Ability to write legibly and knowledge of approved abbreviations.
Must have ability to work in a collaborative role with other disciplines
Must be able to perform Management of Aggressive Behavior.

Pay Range is $77.25 to $98.89 / hour

The salary range for this role may vary above or below the posted range as determined by location. This range has not been adjusted for any specific geographic differential applicable by area where the position may be filled. Compensation takes into account several factors including but not limited to a candidate’s experience, education, skills, licensure and certifications, department equity, training and organizational needs. Base pay is just one piece of the total rewards program offered by Sutter Health. Eligible roles also qualify for a comprehensive benefits package.
