ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
· Administers nursing care to patients under the direction of the registered nurse; includes assessing patients, implementing patient's plan of care, and evaluating the patient's response to care in coordination with the physician.
· Provides patient/family or caregiver education as directed.
· Utilizes hospital information system to process orders/data and retrieve patient information.
· Is knowledgeable in delegation of tasks to certified nursing assistants, patient care technicians and nursing technicians with patients.
· Maintains knowledge of documentation requirements needed for patients' records.
· Works under direct supervision using the Nurse Practice Act, Mercy Medical Center policies, nursing standards, and nursing judgment.
· Maintains knowledge of equipment set-up, maintenance, and use (i.e., IV pumps, monitoring equipment, drainage devices).
· Works rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays as scheduled.
· Initiates emergency support measures (i.e., cardiopulmonary resuscitation, protecting patient from injury).
· Takes assigned call as defined in unit policy.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:
· Assists with patient care duties/tasks (i.e., emptying drainage devices, ambulating, and hygiene).
· Assists with clerical duties (i.e., maintenance of chart, patient record, answering phones and call lights, processing physician orders).
· Maintains patient care supplies, equipment, and environment.
· Provides orientation/education for staff, students, and health care members as directed.
· Effectively assumes job responsibilities of ancillary support during absence.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
· Possession of a current license as a practical nurse issued by the State of Iowa.
· Successfully completes required medication examination prior to passing medication.
· Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training specific to population served within three (3) months of hire.
· Basic Life Support (BLS) certified or obtained within three (3) months of hire. Acceptable credentialing bodies and certifications include American Heart Association Basic Life Support.
