Position Overview – Mechanical Sourcing Engineer

The Mechanical Sourcing Engineer role is a multi-disciplined position that will find you interacting with various business functions including, Supply Chain, Engineering, Business Management, Finance, more. The key position objective is Responsible for developing a mechanical and custom material supply strategy and supply base to support business objectives.  High level tasks include selecting suppliers for custom parts, managing suppliers through the production launch and through production, cost down initiatives, managing revision changes, and seeking improvement opportunities for our material spend.  If you enjoy supplier management of complex parts and supplier relationship building, this could be the opportunity for you!

Key Performance Objectives

  • Identify and qualify preferred mechanical suppliers
  • Lead Technical conversations with customers and suppliers on custom components used for Kimball Electronics Jasper
  • Obtain and review pricing quotes from sources ensuring the best suppliers are used while keeping the supplier base to a preferred few
  • Assist Quote Team by sourcing mechanical BOM components
  • Participate in NPI programs that contain BOM items related to mechanical materials
  • Coordinate Supplier Kick-off Meetings and DFM discussions
  • Place and manage the tooling and validation Purchase Orders for custom parts.
  • Provide status summaries and inputs to management internally and externally
  • Monitor suppliers to ensure the NPI timelines are being met.
  • Approve of payment of tooling milestones as well as final payment on tools, Quality Deliverables, and production parts.
  • Develop programs to support annual cost saving objectives
  • Obtain competitive bids, analyze costs and negotiate/award contracts based on total cost of ownership
  • Drive continuous improvement with the mechanical supply base
  • Assist Supplier Quality with issues related to quality
  • Assist Supplier Quality with periodic audits
  • Travel to suppliers as needed to facilitate partnerships, resolution of issues, etc

  • Learn Kimball Electronics business rhythm, customer base, and supply base
  • Learn how to utilize the MRP system (SAP), and various other system tools to perform role
  • Learn current sourcing methodologies and best practices

  • Successfully be able to source product on an independent basis
  • Able to independently manage the supplier launch of new parts
  • Beginning to identify improvement opportunities

  • Created relationships with key suppliers
  • Proving value to customers with price reductions
  • Proving value to organization with cost reductions and savings
  • Starting to implement the NPI management of suppliers as a system with other buyers in the corporation
