General Area of Responsibility (Basic function)
- Perform related duties under command of Port Engineer for any Tug, Boat, or Jetty shore or offshore, and provide assistance when required.
- Perform his duties on the two front Tugs; one day on a tug and one day on the other front tug, and another Mechanic perform typically on two rear tugs (Escort Tugs) as instructed and supervised by Chief Engineer in charge.
- Perform repair tasks, maintenance task (Deck/Engine), and watch keeping as assigned by Chief Engineer.
- Maintain awareness and continually observe all Boat’s machineries, control consoles, piping system, emergency procedures, safety precautions and stores, and keep the tug workshop tidy and clean.
- The Tug Mechanic is not allowed to start or stop any engine / motor without Chief Engineer’s orders except in case of emergency.
- The Engine Rating has the obligation to Stop Work whenever a task is unsafe (by personal judgement) and then inform the Master. Deck Hands must know the procedure Stop Work that also include the `Take 5`. `Stop Work` and `Take 5` is simplest measures Svitzer have for crew to prevent personal injuries. Master is responsible for instruction.
- The Engine Rating must know the procedure Proactive and Near Miss Reporting for the various type of occurrences that should be reported to the Chief Engineer or Master with the potential to cause injury, illness, pollution, defects or damage. Chief Engineer is responsible for instruction.
- Comply with the regulations of the company safety management system HMS.
Specific Area of Responsibility (Duties during bow/escort tugs operation)
- Observe engine control room.
- Ensure that all air pumps and compressors in remote Stand By mode.
- Continually observe indicators for RPM, Pressure, Temperature, Volts, Hertz, Kilowatts and Amps of Generators, Air Pumps, Compressors, Coolers and all other operating engines.
- Check regularly engine room for any leaks (fuel, oil, water, air), abnormal noise, hot spots, bilge level and any other instruction by the Chief Engineer in charge

- Notify Chief Engineer of any alarms or abnormalities that arise while Chief Engineer operates towing winch in bridge.
- Operate towing winch in case of emergency after instructions from Master or Chief Engineer.
- Provide assistance to bridge and deck when required in case of emergency after instructions from Master.
- Connect towing wire when required in case of emergency after instructions from Master.
- Provide assistance to small boats/mooring team when required in case of emergency after instructions from Pilot or Master.
Preferred Experiences
Five years’ experience on board a marine vessel, preferably a tugboat
Required Education and competencies
- STCW95 certification (III/4) .
- Valid seaman book
- Valid seafarer medical certificate
