The Role: The Malta Controller supports the EMEA Controllers organization as well as the Finance teams across the region to ensure that the accounting operations are reported timely and accurately, and that local statutory and International Financial Reporting Standards (“IFRS”) requirements are adhered to, in addition to supporting enterprise-wide initiatives.

This role requires 2 days a week or 9 days a month work in S&P Global office in Malta.


The Team: The EMEA Enterprise Controller team is responsible for the month-end close, management & statutory reporting, and internal controls across the region. The team values collaboration across various corporate functions, delivering to our internal & external stakeholders, and a strong team ethic. The role reports to the Assistant EMEA Controller.


The Impact: This position supports the EMEA Controllers team locally to ensure internal and external reporting is reported timely and in compliance with IFRS or other local statutory requirements. This position also supports the EMEA Controller in partnering locally with business and operations to ensure that governance and internal controls are adhered to, driving operational excellence.

Responsibilities:

  • Review the loan portfolio and issuer creditworthiness both at the time of entering into new loans and monitoring on an ongoing basis.
  • Review the valuation of loans, including assessing interest rate benchmarking.
  • Prepare investment recommendation reports to support the acceptance of financial decisions, which may include assessment of:
    • Key loan terms including interest rates, tenor, payment dates, and loan covenants.
    • The financial performance of borrowers.
    • Determining realistically available alternative investment methodologies.
    • Risk assessment.
  • Understand and be able to make recommendations regarding the form of funding (capital issuance vs. debt, etc.).
  • Instruct and oversee work undertaken by third parties as required for tax, accounting, and treasury.
  • Negotiate and sign contracts on behalf of the companies.
  • Prepare the general ledger and management accounts.
  • Oversee/ensure compliance with local and US GAAP reporting and local tax compliance.
  • Analyse/interrogate key balance sheet & P&L accounts, with the preparation and posting of any associated journals.
  • Support month-end processes, including the preparation & posting of journals along with the preparation of balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Prepare and post payroll journals.
  • Prepare financial statements for legal entities in accordance with IFRS and US GAAP.
  • Liaise and interact with external auditors to ensure the timely completion of statutory audits carried out on legal entities.
  • Ensure timely submission of financial/non-financial information to local authorities in Malta.
  • Assist with the preparation of tax returns and associated accounting workflows, including processing payments and balance sheet reconciliation of related accounts.

  • Support the Assistant EMEA Controller with merger, acquisition & disposal projects and legal entity restructuring projects impacting the region.
  • Support process improvement projects, identifying and implementing best practice processes across the region.

What We’re Looking For:

Basic Required Qualifications:

  • 10+ years’ experience in a finance or accounting role, preferably in Public Accounting, including a thorough understanding of IFRS and accounting standards generally accepted in the United States (US GAAP).
  • ACA / CPA / CA / ACCA or equivalent certification.
  • Good understanding of general tax accounting and local tax regimes.
  • Experience in financial statement preparation under IFRS.
  • Strong problem-solving ability and results-oriented.
  • Good interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Well organized and able to prioritize conflicting deadlines. Attention to details.
  • Strong desire to exceed expectations.
  • Proficiency in English.

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in Maltese.
  • Experience in financial statement preparation under US GAAP.
  • Systems-savvy and experienced in Oracle, Alteryx, Tableau.
  • Bachelor’s degree in public accounting, finance, or equivalent.
  • Good understanding of general tax accounting and local tax regimes.
  • Experience in treasury functions including managing loan portfolios.
