Job Summary: The incumbent serves as a journeyman Maintenance Mechanic performing operation & maintenance of industrial & commercial heating systems, cooling system, medical gas system, water system & electrical equipment serving a large medical center. In addition, mechanic will perform duties to support expansion of Engineering Service Maintenance section and Project section. Incumbent performs duty with minimal or no supervision working tour of duties on swing shift & graveyard shift including weekends.

Major Duties:

  • Mechanic performs service and repairs on heating system, cooling system, air handlers, tube distribution systems, entry and exist system, medical gas system, water system, electrical system, and lighting system with knowledge in operations working with complex building management system controlling various components and systems in medical center. Work with Johnson Control Institute MetaSys monitor and control of the building management system. Accomplishes task independently or with a team to provide immediate response to urgent or emergency situations or conditions that occurs after duty hours within medical center. Performs periodic or scheduled preventive maintenance on all associate systems and components as assigned. Plans and coordinates with employee, engineering, medical staff, contractors on planned projects to support engineering services after normal work of operations. Support Project Section construction, Transportation/Mailroom assigned responsibilities and Ground Maintenance crew interior and exterior service and maintenance functions and additional taskings. - Maintenance mechanic provides immediate responses during after hour shifts to mitigate, isolate, repair, adjust, test and service air handler units, air conditioning systems, heating systems, medical gas system, tube systems, fire suppression systems, water, or plumbing systems, electrical or mechanical doors throughout the medical center. - Maintenance mechanics services and repairs equipment and system used to condition the air for different kinds of structures such as warehouses, hospital, and large office buildings and complexes including those with areas that have special requirements such as communication centers, electronic data processing centers, operating rooms, radiology, laboratories, clean rooms, training rooms, and other areas with sensitive equipment. - Maintenance mechanic performs electrical work at this grade may involve installing, modifying, repairing, maintaining, troubleshooting, testing, and loading new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems and associated fixtures, controls, and equipment. - Maintenance mechanic applies electrical and mechanical skill operating multiple and various electrical and battery-operated tools to accomplish maintenance repair in a safe manner. Knowledgeable and experienced in the use of basic hand tools as well as the use of multi-meters and test equipment to troubleshoot, diagnose and functional test industrial equipment throughout medical center. - Maintenance mechanics maintain and repair water filtration and water softening systems, heat exchangers and associated controls to include repairing leaks and unclogging stopped up drains. Incumbent experienced with blueprint drawings to locate and isolate floor levels and equipment. From power or wet system to assist in preforming repairs. - Maintenance mechanic monitors, adjusts test the building management system to view and monitor the system status of the medical center in the control room, or other remote Monitors associated with repairs. - Maintenance Mechanic will perform duties as assigned by the supervisor to support construction crew to renovate, remodel, minor construction of building space, servicing and maintaining of real property equipment and VA owned equipment. - Maintenance Mechanic will support Transportation/Mailroom supervisor to service and maintain VA owned vehicles and GSA vehicle maintenance program. - Maintenance will provide mailroom support functions for administrative and medical essential pick-ups and delivery supporting clinics, medical staff, and employees. - Maintenance Mechanic perform ground maintenance duties to maintain improved and unimproved landscaped areas for irrigation distribution system, watering control measures, periodic pruning, tree trimming, and duties as assigned by supervisors. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, Shift Times TBD Position Description Title/PD#: Maintenance Mechanic/PD00786A Physical Requirements: Maintenance mechanics at this grade make repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and other hard-to- reach places. This requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Maintenance mechanics frequently lift and carry tools, equipment, and parts that weigh up to 20 pounds and, less often, up to 40 pounds. Occasionally, they lift or move with assistance, moderately heavy objects weighting more than 40 pounds. Hoists, holders, and pulleys are operated when removing or installing units such as large motors, pumps, compressors, condensers, chillers, and other heavy failed or replacement equipment.
