Job Summary: This position is primarily responsible for the daily operation of the Textile Care section of EMS at Coatesville VAMC. The incumbent is responsible for the overall direction of the laundry section. Work assignments consists of patient assistance program, patient clothing, uniforms and linen deliveries. Responsible for planning of weekly schedules and sequence of operations for 15- 20 wage grade employees. The section is made of WG-2, WG-3 and WG-5 employees.

Major Duties:

  • Laundry Supervisor is responsible for adhering to proper textile care standards/ techniques, ensuring hospital linens are clean and orderly, conducting daily rounds and reporting necessary repairs to appropriate contacts. Laundry Supervisor trains laundry staff in routine linen and laundry procedures. Informs and instructs staff on new developments in textile care techniques and procedures. The incumbent is responsible for the work performance, promoting positive communication, clean work environment and motivation of Laundry unit employees. This includes; developing standard operating procedures, written, oral or verbal instructions, assisting developing operating instructions, establishing employee meetings before and after shifts, and scheduling meetings for employees, writing reports, completing forms and supervisory personal functions such as leave approval, creation and evaluation of performance standards, determining training needs, making recommendations for promotions and labor/management relations. He/she is responsible for the storage and safekeeping of patient belongings and valuables released to the VA for care while residing as a patient in the medical center. Duties are performed in the various Medical Center buildings, which are comprised of non-patient care areas, general and specialized medical areas, and psychiatric wards. Makes frequent inspections to determine whether adequate sanitation safety standards are being maintained as well as if employees are at their assigned locations performing their duties efficiently in compliance with instructions. During inspection, evaluate equipment; such as sewing machines, lablers, scale for proper weights and transport carts; to determine if repairs are necessary or if there is evidence of improper use. As necessary, prepare work orders for repairs, recommends replacement of equipment, and provide hands on training for employees. Assigns employees to task as required, and instructs them in any changes in routine work assignments or methods. Makes frequent inspections to determine whether employees are at their assigned locations performing their duties efficiently. As required by the work load, vacations, emergencies, etc., reassigns personnel to secure maximum coverage. Reviews work in progress and completed work and, as required, identifies areas of opportunity of improvement. The incumbent is assigned to help inspect, monitor, observe, document, and confirm quality of work related to laundry and RMW pickup, meeting quality assurance plans. This includes; dumpster inspections, air freshener checks, escorting contractors, monitoring work while escorting contractors, checking shredding containers, ensuring and making arrangement for contractors to obtain access to areas, dispenser checking. These activities are expected to be completed each shift and confirmed with checklists verifying completion inspections and survey of work performed. Incumbent must conduct fire/safety inspection process and limited inspection of all patient care and non-patient care buildings under the general guidance provided by the safety and quality assurance staff. Inspections shall be conducted, documented, transmitted and followed-up using the standards set forth in the Facility Management Service Fire/Safety Inspection Policy. Set performance for subordinates and provides formal appraisals of work performance. Initiates recommendation for promotion or reassignment of subordinates. Counsels employees, adjusts informal complaints and grievances through discussion with employees and union representatives. Initiates disciplinary actions as needed. Daily, the incumbent completes time records, checklists, forms, maintains EMS records and data and prepares reports for submission to higher level of authority. The subordinate employees overseen by the Laundry Supervisor may work throughout the 128.5 acre campus in multiple buildings and at a remote CBOC within an hour away. These employees are dispersed and do not all work together. Other duties as assigned and as needed. Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 7:00am-3:30pm. Position Description Title/PD#: Laundry Worker Supervisor/PD023000 Physical Requirements: The incumbent is subjected to a great deal of walking, standing, bending, stooping, and climbing stairs. Working Conditions: Usually works in a well-lit, climate controlled building but may be exposed to the outside elements periodically. The Laundry Supervisor is expected to cover other units and may have to make use of government buses or vehicles to travel to another geographic location up request, attend meetings on other campus as requested.
