This is a Laboratory position that is part of a family of job responsibilities that provide hydrocarbon and water analysis for QA/QC of refinery processes, most of which follow ASTM procedures. Must apply working knowledge of laboratory equipment, perform laboratory procedures in a timely manner with demonstrated accuracy, and be able to identify unusual results. This position must collect samples for certifying product; some of the samples will be hot, some vaporous and collection is at all times of day and weather conditions. Job often requires you to be on your feet for hours at a time, working to get timely results communicated. This position routinely interfaces multiple internal departments.

Overtime should be expected and will be required at times based on laboratory need.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Follow and enforce all safety rules and guidelines as established by the company to ensure overall safe operation.
  • Collects liquid and gaseous process stream samples from pick up points and capture samples for product certification.
  • Analyze samples utilizing ASTM methods and SOPs.
  • Accurately enter analytical data into LIMS to ensure timely dissemination to other departments.
  • Participates in proficiency testing programs and SQC programs.
  • Conduct basic trouble shooting techniques, calibrate analytical instruments, and/or equipment and for instruments.
  • Perform minor maintenance of laboratory equipment and apparatus, depending on skill & experience.
  • Keeps work area clean.
  • Adjust or prioritize work duties for best suit overall lab workflow.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or related science field with a minimum of 4 college level courses in Chemistry preferred.
  • Experience: Experience in QC/production laboratory in petroleum refining or petrochemical industry highly preferred.
  • Physical Requirements: The employee must be able to procure samples from the tank farm and pickup locations in process areas; this requires climbing and walking in inclement weather.  Employee must stand/walk 6 hours per day during normal shift; up to 8 hours during high load times. Must be able to lift 50lbs. Must be able to handle monotony of daily routine.
  • Driver’s License required

JOB CONDITIONS:

The technician will be working with petroleum laboratory chemicals (i.e. acids, bases, compressed gases, crude oil, H2S, liquefied petroleum gases, gasoline, naphtha, jet fuel, diesel, fuel oil, asphalt) some of which are flammable and could expose the technician if not handled properly. The physical environment in the laboratory is usually very good; however, hot testing process, heights, high pressures, pinch point, and flammable materials are all routinely encountered in laboratory work.  Marathon Kenai Refinery is a smoke-free workplace.

SKILLS:

  • Maintain mental alertness at all times to ensure safe and accurate performance of own duties and coworkers. Must be able to work routinely under a deadline.
  • Computer/software proficiency - MS Office Suite
  • Capable of working with minimal amount of supervision at times and working closely with others for group tasks.
  • Mechanical Aptitude – some equipment maintenance will be required.
  • Good written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
