Position Overview
This position encompasses several areas of the KTAR News talk product, including producing a talk show, handling post-production of the shows via podcasting and social media, and generating promotional content for the show. The role’s daily activities include coordinating live interviews, audio, digital, and other program content. Make full contributions to assigned show times and work effectively with on-air host(s), other producers, and collaborate with the news department. This role also requires the ability to operate the on-air studio console and handle broadcast controls when assigned or needed.
Note: Work configurations are subject to change based on business needs and at company discretion.
- This position is an onsite role that requires the employee to regularly work at our Phoenix site.
What You Will Do:
Primary job duties will include, but are not limited to:
- Work in tandem with on-air talk host(s) in producing compelling talk show programming and provide guidance and feedback to enhance his/her on-air presentation.
- Evaluate current news or sports events each day and offer suggestions on how those events might be presented on the air in a way that is compelling to all listeners.
- Research possible interview topics and guests by careful study of developing news and communicating with show and station contacts.
- Working knowledge of current local/national news and/or sports events to be able to add to radio and digital segments.
- Share and brainstorm ideas which could bring about programming continuity. Work cooperatively with other producer(s) and other departments within the newsroom. Fill in for other producer(s) and board-operators as necessary.
- Be an on-air, on-video, and digital/multimedia contributor for the show.
- Record, edit and upload audio for on-demand platforms.
- May be called upon to fill-in as host.
- Spearhead all social media for the designated show via Instagram, Facebook, X and others as assigned. This includes dissemination of posts, videos and interaction with the audience.
- Daily cooperation with video producers to identify compelling content for digital distribution.
- Produce daily multimedia content to enhance the show’s reach through shorter clips and content.
- Create daily imaging elements to promote the show’s content, as well as the content of other talk shows on this station.
- Work in collaboration with the imaging director to create segment feature sound elements and execute promotional expectations.
- When assigned the operation of the on-air console, air commercials per program log, and maintain accurate transmitter logs and program logs.
- Ensure that transmitter is operating according to FCC parameters, record satellite feeds, Air emergency alerts.
- Run scheduled emergency alert system (EAS) alerts.
- Give time cues and run all show elements live during the show as well as during newscasts.
- Report equipment problems, update discrepancy reports to communicate any occurrence that departs from program log or quality goals.
Skills and Experience We Are Looking For:
- Minimum two years post high school education in communication/journalism/talk shows with skills in the following areas: booking guests, broadcast journalism, show production, writing, computer and operational skills, related field, or equivalent.
- Exceptional skills in booking guests, broadcast and AP style writing, and social media.
- Robust knowledge and execution skills of social media strategy
- Minimum two years of experience in news/talk/sports radio control room work preferred
- Experience in a broadcast journalism environment, professional or collegiate level.
- Knowledge of newswire services and a working knowledge of computer skills.
- Aggressive attitude with a strong desire to advance in the broadcasting media.
- Quick learner who is fully committed to meeting the challenge.
- Strong desire to work at the state’s largest and most respected radio station.
Physical Demands
- Receive, process, and maintain information through oral and/or written communication effectively.
- Manual dexterity and fine motor skills to operate computer keys and general office equipment. Ability to work on a computer for prolonged periods of time.
- Sit and/or stand for extended periods of time.
Compensation
$19.00 - $25.00 per hour. Hourly rate to be determined by multiple factors including but not limited to evaluation of the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant along with internal equity and alignment with market data.
