Job Description:

This job is designed to provide students with paid professional experience to further their education and training and is academically oriented for the student’s benefit. To qualify students must be enrolled in an accredited school program related to the type of work they are expected to perform. Positions will terminate upon completion of the internship period. Incumbents may deal with confidential information, which is expected to be maintained as confidential and shared only on a need-to-know basis with city employees and elsewhere when authorized by the intern’s city supervisor.

About the Position:

This internship will focus on applying engineering principles in the review of civil engineering plans specifically related to utility installation.  The position will also be exposed to all elements of the Development Services Division and the working groups involved with issuing utility permits.    

About the Team:

The Salt Lake City Department of Public Utilities’ (SLCDPU’s) Development Services Division supports the review and permitting of all construction in the SLCDPU service area.  Our team processes, reviews, and permits new construction, site development, remodels, new utility services, utility service repair, and any other work that involves water, sewer, storm drain, and street lighting.  We have a varied group of planners, engineers, and technicians. 

Position Salary Range:

  • $16 - $19

Key Responsibilities:

  • Under the supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer, reviews plans and documents submitted for construction permits. 
  • Develops resources and tools for team’s use in the review and permitting of proposed construction. 
  • Tracks and documents Division process and work activities. 
  • Other tasks as assigned.
  • Complies with city and department policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be enrolled in an accredited college or university, though summer internships may not require concurrent enrollment if student is in good standing with the educational institution.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Must have good organizational and analytical skills.
  • Must have good computer skills.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  •  Moderate physical effort, comfortable working conditions, and handling of light weights.  Intermittent sitting, standing, and walking may be required.  Subject to extended exposure to computer visual display terminals
