Johnson Matthey are seeking talented and motivated students to join our research team through our well-established 1 -Year Industrial Placement programme at our Technology Centre in Sonning Common, near Reading, starting in July 2026. With 12+ roles available, these placements will suit undergraduates currently studying applicable science and engineering degrees which have a 1-year industrial placement/internship option included in their courses.

On the application, you will have the opportunity to select which of the Research Groups/Projects you would be most interested in. Please only select 2.
We welcome candidates undertaking a range of science-based degree courses, including Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Physics and Data Science. We are particularly looking for candidates with an interest in material synthesis, characterisation, electrochemistry, data analysis, material evaluation, chemical engineering, and application of sustainability concepts to real-life problems.
The role:
A range of laboratory-based activities.
Maintaining excellent EHS standards and housekeeping at all times.
Keeping an accurate track record of the work carried out by using electronic lab notes.
Interacting with project leaders regularly to define the project needs and to understand their experimental objectives to be able to conduct independent work in the laboratory.
Reviewing the technical literature to develop an understanding of the relevant technologies.
Writing monthly reports and making presentations to communicate the results of their work to project team
Communicating results to other stakeholders across JM
Contributing ideas and suggestions for improvements to the project
Key skills/qualifications that will help you succeed in this role:
Currently studying a Science based degree (Chemistry/Material Science/Chemical Engineering/Physics/Data Science)
Experience in data analysis tools (Desirable)
