About the Role
Under the guidance of the Manager, Team Leader, and Consultant Psychiatrist, and in conjunction with the Wellways Program Manager, the Grade 2 Psychologist will provide a high standard of psychological intervention, recovery planning and support for consumers in the PARC program.

  • Conduct short-term (e.g., 1 - 4 sessions) of psychological intervention to consumers at PARC who are referred to the PARC psychology service.
  • Provide best practice/evidence based interventions for consumers presenting with high prevalence disorders (e.g anxiety, depression, PTSD) and low prevalence disorders (e.g psychosis) such as ACT, CBT, and other evidence-based therapies.
  • Develop and deliver group-based interventions for PARC participants according to needs of the program.


Classifications for this position will range from classification range from

  • Psychologist Grade 2 PK1 - PK4 ($94,478- $106,906 per annum pro rata)

PARC is a 10 bed short term residential unit that provides early intervention for people who are becoming mentally unwell in the community, as well as support to strengthen and consolidate gains made for people in the early stages of recovery from an acute psychiatric episode. LOCAL WORK ENVIRONMENT

St. Vincent’s Mental Health (SVMH) provides high quality, recovery-oriented services across an adult area mental health service for the inner city areas of Yarra and Boroondara. The service utilises the Strengths Model of recovery and this model is embedded across all parts of the mental health service. St Vincent’s is also committed to the development of a strong peer support workforce. The adult mental health service components are: The Footbridge Community Care Unit (CCU), the 44 bed Acute Inpatient Service (AIS) located on the St. Vincent’s Hospital site, the North Fitzroy PARC and two community mental health services (CMHS) at Hawthorn (Hawthorn CMHS) and East Melbourne (Clarendon CMHS). Community mental health services comprise the Triage and Crisis assessment and Treatment (CAT) service, Continuing Care (CCT), Mobile Support and Treatment (MST) and Homeless Outreach (CHOPS) services. The Primary Intervention and Care Team (PICT) includes Primary Mental Health, Extended Triage and HOPE (Suicide Prevention). A Consultation & Liaison Service is provided to the health service. NEXUS Dual Diagnosis Service and the Body Image and Eating Disorders Assessment and Treatment Service (BETRS) are regional services. State-wide services are the Victorian Dual Disability Service and the Victorian Transcultural Mental Health . The Acute Inpatient Service includes 5 beds designated as the Koori State-wide Inpatient Service and linked to the Victorian Aboriginal Health Service.

POSITION PURPOSE

PARC is a 10 bed short term residential unit that provides early intervention for people who are becoming mentally unwell in the community, as well as support to strengthen and consolidate gains made for people in the early stages of recovery from an acute psychiatric episode. It is run in partnership between St Vincent’s Mental Health (SVMH) and Wellways.

Under the guidance of the Manager, Team Leader, and Consultant Psychiatrist, and in conjunction with the Wellways Program Manager, the Psychologist will provide a high standard of psychological intervention, recovery planning and support for consumers in the PARC program. The psychologist will contribute to program enhancement, including the development and delivery of a psychology framework for participants.

POSITION DUTIES

  • Support collaborative and multidisciplinary-based assessments and formulations to inform treatment plans
  • Conduct short-term (e.g., 1 - 4 sessions) of psychological intervention to consumers at PARC who are referred to the PARC psychology service.
  • Provide best practice/evidence based interventions for consumers presenting with high prevalence disorders (e.g anxiety, depression, PTSD) and low prevalence disorders (e.g psychosis) such as ACT, CBT, and other evidence-based therapies.
  • Develop and deliver group-based interventions for PARC participants according to needs of the program.
  • Provide secondary consultation and education to PARC regarding specific psychological interventions for complex consumers and assist in the development of recovery plans for those consumers.
  • Provide input into the development of a psychology framework of evidence-based care for PARC participants.
  • Work within the Strengths Model of recovery orientated practice. Build a therapeutic alliance with the consumer and family/carers and actively engage them in the planning, delivery and evaluation of their care.
  • Display clinical expertise in the utilisation of discipline-specific skills as appropriate and as required by consumers, their family/carers and the service.
  • Assist in the provision of primary, secondary and tertiary consultation services, community development and education, liaison and linkage to other agencies that also provide support to people with mental illnesses as required.
  • Display a high standard of clinical practice and professional conduct at all times.
  • Work collaboratively within the multi-disciplinary team, including lived experience workforce and Wellways staff.
  • Participate in quality improvement, research and evaluation activities.
  • Participate in SVMH discipline specific activities, such as discipline meetings.
  • Maintenance of all documentation in line with SVMH policies, including clinical documentation, outcome measures and CMI reporting.

SELECTION CRITERIA

ESSENTIAL REGISTRATION, LICENSE OR QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Registration with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) under the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law Act (2009) as a general psychologist.
  • Practice endorsement with AHPRA as a Clinical Psychologist or eligibility to enter a Clinical Psychology registrar program with the Psychology Board of Australia
  • Masters Degree or Doctorate in Clinical Psychology recognized by Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC)
  • Current Victorian drivers license

OTHER ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Experience and relevant training in the provision of assessment, interventions and evaluation of best practice psychological interventions (CBT, ACT, group work etc.) for consumers with a severe mental illness.
  • A comprehensive understanding and working knowledge of the Mental Health and Wellbeing Act 2022 (including amendments) and other relevant legislation.
  • Commitment to work collaboratively and effectively as part of the multidisciplinary team with multiple key stakeholders both internal and external of the St Vincent’s Health organization (including consumers, carers, family members and community agencies).
  • Demonstrated ability to working collaboratively with clients and carers to promote self determination and enable progress towards reaching personal goals.
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, including problem solving ability and conflict resolution skills, as well as sound oral and writing skills.
  • Demonstrated ability in working as part of the multi-disciplinary clinical team in promoting a standard of excellence in clinical practice. 
  • Experience in the development and application of evidence based therapeutic interventions for people with major mental health disorders, including psychological interventions for co-morbid high prevalence disorders.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the theories of human behaviour and psychopathology and their application in clinical practice.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify psychological needs of the consumer  facilitate access to appropriate resources
